Cinderella (1997)

Ever after: a Cinderella Story (1998)

One of the first mainstream versions that went back to the true heart of the story – as written by Charles Perrault (believed to be the second version of the tale). Starring Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott, Cinderella was given a post feminism treatment set in Renaissance France.

A Cinderella Story (2004)

A modern spin starring Hilary Duff as an overlooked, overworked daughter who strikes a secret bond with Chad Michael Murray. The movie also features Jennifer Coolidge, Regina King and Dan Byrd, and spurred two similarly-updated sequels with Selena Gomez and Lucy Hale.

Ella Enchanted (2004)

This big-screen fantasy adapts Gail Carson Levine's 1997 novel (originally based on the Cinderella tale) and stars Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Steve Coogan and Minnie Driver. The story follows Ella (Hathaway) as she tries to break an obedience curse placed on her when she was a child.

Into the Woods (2014)

Although this is really an amalgam of fairytales – Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack and The Beanstalk – the linchpin is Cinderella. Based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name, this one sees Anna Kendrick donning the glass slipper with a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine and Meryl Streep.

Cinderella gets a new treatment courtesy of Kenneth Brannagh and Disney. It’s a live action version starring Lily James as Cinders, Richard Madden as the Prince, Cate Blanchett as the stepmother. Critics describe the movie as having eye-popping visuals with Cate being deliciously evil.
