The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

If you want something raw, real and tragic, this movie should be number one on your list. Unlike many other movies set in high school, The Perks of Being a Wallflower doesn’t glamorize high school but instead shows the dark side of what can happen. It is a story about a young introvert named Charlie who experiences the magical highs and crushing lows of growing up. It’s a modern masterpiece with moving characters and story lines.

The Spectacular Now (2013)

Over time Hollywood has really changed the perception of high school and left children with ridiculous expectations, therefore it is really rare that movies truly give a sneak peek of what high school is really all about. This movie is one of those exceptions! The storyline follows a high school senior Sutter Keely, who unexpectedly falls in love with the good girl Aimee Finecky without realizing it himself.

21 Jump Street (2012)

If you are looking for humorous entertainment, 21 Jump Street is the way to go! This hilarious and action packed flick is about two undercover cops who are on a secret mission undercover in a drug ring of a local high school. Due to their youthful appearance, they have to impersonate regular high school students and work from inside. Their plans take an interesting turn of events as they find out that high school is definitely not what it used to be.

4

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

John Tucker Must Die is personally one of my favorite chick flicks. It is mainly about three girls who find out they were dating the same guy at the same time. They devise a plan to give John Tucker a taste of his own medicine. They recruit the quiet girl in school and give her a crash course on how to steal the heart of John Tucker. Once he falls for the bait, she is supposed to break his heart just like he did to many other girls. However things don’t go as expected and the two actually fall for each other.

5

Clueless (1995)

You can never go wrong with a classic! Clueless is a must-see film that takes you on the journey of the ups and downs of adolescence. The storyline mainly revolves around Cher who is an upper class high school student in Beverly Hills. Although her appearance might seem superficial at first, she really has some inner substance, which helps her deal with her family and friends.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

You know that a movie is worth watching when it is a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. A Walk to Remember is one of the most emotional and touching movies that really tugs at your heartstrings. It follows the story of two North Carolina teens, who fall in love with each other despite the apparent differences. While it seems like everything and everyone is against them, their love just grows stronger and stronger with time.

7

The First Time (2012)

What I love the most about this movie is that it explores the idea that your ‘first time’ might not be what you expect it to be. When two high schoolers, Dave and Aubrey meet at a party, they automatically click over a girl that Dave can’t have and Aubrey’s boyfriend who doesn’t get her. They soon realize that maybe they are, the answer to each other’s problems.

The way high school is depicted in movies is usually the total opposite of what really goes on, but for some reason watching those false perceptions can get quite addicting. What are some of your favorite movies set in high school?
