7 Great Oldies Movies That You Have to See ...

One of my absolute favorite ways to spend a weekend afternoon is snuggling up on the couch to watch great oldies movies. Turner Classic Movies is always available on cable or satellite. Netflix has a great selection, too. I know everyone is into the computer-enhanced special effects, super action films, fantasy, or blood and gore, but take a step back into the past when there were real people in movies and not animated images. Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where people used their manners, dressed nicely, and where men swept women off their feet? Yes, just a dream world, I know, but for one afternoon, it’s nice to imagine. This list of great oldies movies is my own personal list of favorites, so let me hear your list.

Wuthering Heights, 1939

I’m making this number on in my list of great oldies movies for a reason. It’s my number one all time favorite. Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon are wonderful in their parts as Heathcliff and Cathy, and oh how I cried. He loves her with all his being, and she is who she is, and oh my goodness, you feel his pain.

Arsenic and Old Lace, 1944

Are there any men around like Cary Grant anymore? In this movie, I was surprised at how great he was in a comedic role. His two spinster aunts really surprise him in this one and he doesn’t know which way to turn!

The Uninvited, 1944

I was lucky enough to catch this movie from beginning to end one afternoon, and it’s since been a solid favorite. A brother and sister purchase an old house by the sea and eventually discover the house has a past!

All about Eve, 1950

This movie proves that karma will definitely come around and bite! The wonderful Bette Davis gives her famous line, "Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night." An aspiring actress works her way in to the life of Bette Davis’ character and eventually betrays her. Then karma comes into play, and you’ll love it when it does!

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, 1962

Can imagine Bette Davis allowing herself to be made up to look as creepy as she does in this movie? I love this movie, especially since Joan Crawford also stars with Davis. The premise is the sisters, Davis and Crawford, are actresses. Baby Jane, Davis, isn’t famous anymore and no one even recognizes her. As Blanche, Crawford, is still recognized, and Jane’s jealousy turns into pure meanness! At first, you may think this movie is a little kitschy, but you’ll find you can’t stop watching.

Clark Cable and Claudette Colbert are great in this movie. She is a spoiled rich girl running away after just getting married, and he is a reporter who needs a good story. He discovers who she is and wants to write his story about her. I enjoyed this movie and try to watch it any time it’s on TCM.

The Bishop’s Wife, 1947

Cary Grant plays an angel, Dudley, brought to earth to help a bishop learn that his grand new cathedral isn’t as important as he thinks it is. Set at Christmas time, you’ll usually catch this one during the Christmas season on Turner Classics. Be sure to watch!

I hope you’ll watch these great oldies movies and enjoy them as much as I have. There are so many more out there and I can’t wait for my next free weekend to find my couch, a blanket, and the remote!
