High School Romcoms for Girls Who Feel Nostalgic ...

We love rom coms (is it our hormones or something?). But isn’t there just something a little more special when a romantic comedy is set in high school? Maybe it takes us back to those awkward years when we still thought love was a fairytale, before we became jaded by real life love and its rollercoaster ride. Let’s be reminded of those magical times.

Grease (1978)

Grease is not only one of the best rom-coms set in a high school, it is simply one of the greatest films of all time! Undoubtedly known best as a musical, there are definitely elements of comedy throughout the film that keep you laughing just as much as you sing. From the hapless antics of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies to the clichéd geekiness of Eugene, Grease is a timeless classic that spans a number of different genres. I’m singing now … ah wella-wella-wella ah – tell me more, tell me more … join in if you like.

Clueless (1995)

Clueless is a high school rom com that defined an entire generation. From the cool and quirky fashions of the main characters to the now outdated teenage slang, we all loved following Cher and Dionne’s adventures in romance with their respective love interests. Full of now retro looking high school house parties and with a great soundtrack to boot, Clueless is definitely an all time favourite!

10 Things I Hate about You (1999)

10 Things I Hate About You brought the beauty and talent of a young Heath Ledger to the mainstream, and this Shakespeare-inspired tale of teenage love in the jungle that is high school has a timeless quality that has seen it stand the test of time, still as popular today as it was in the '90s. Ledger wasn’t the film’s only success story, as it also kick-started the careers of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Julia Stiles.

Mean Girls (2004)

Though Tina Fey’s 2004 film centres very much on the theme of high school bullying and cliques, the romantic subplot between Lindsay Lohan and class heartthrob Jonathan Bennett is central to much of the action that takes place. In terms of comedy, you will be hard pushed to find a high school movie that is funnier than Mean Girls, a modern genre classic!

Pretty in Pink (1986)

One of the many John Hughes movies that defined the 1980s high school genre, Pretty In Pink showcases '80s superstar Molly Ringwald at her best as a lower class teen schoolgirl who falls for the good looking rich boy. The film boasts some of the most memorable cinematic moments of the entire decade, in particular Jon Cryer’s brilliant miming performance of an Otis Redding classic!

Heathers (1988)

There is no doubt that Heathers is a romantic comedy, but what is slightly different is the fact that it is so dark, giving a completely different take on the high school genre. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater as two young students who fall hard for each other, the only problem being that Slater’s character J.D. is a psychopath! Full of laughs but still sinister in places, Heathers is another '80s classic.

Easy a (2010)

The film that put Emma Stone on the map, Easy A is another high school rom com with a twist, taking inspiration from the novel The Scarlet Letter to explore the meanness of the school rumour mill and how it can affect an individual’s experience. Full of laughs and ultimately a satisfying romance, Easy A is arguably one of the best films of the genre in the last five years.
