7 American TV Shows Adapted from British Shows ...

I watch a lot of TV and sometimes I like to check out shows from the UK, but I never realized how many of American TV shows adapted from British shows I watch. It has actually become a little bit of a hobby for me to compare these shows to see which is better. It doesn’t hurt that I get to hear those cute British accents! Here are 7 shows that you may not have known were American shows adapted from British shows.

1

The Office

Probably the most successful and recognizable remake from overseas, «The Office» is definitely my favorite show on this list. Out of all of the American shows adapted from British shows, this is the only one filled with moments that will make you laugh until you cry and characters that you will love. Sadly, the UK version of «The Office» didn’t last as long as its U.S. counterpart, but watching either version would not be a waste of your time.

2

Skins

A big hit in the UK, but a big flop in the States, «Skins» barely lasted a season on MTV when it premiered last year. The show features a group of teenagers who are trying to find their way in the world, but who find themselves in precarious and sometimes sexy situations. The British version is definitely worth checking out, but the U.S. series is one remake that can definitely be skipped.

3

Shameless

Sex, drugs, and a look into the harsh realities of the world, «Shameless» is a show that everyone should be watching. Still going strong after ten seasons, this is definitely a hit in both the UK and the States. This is one show that will pull at your heart strings when you see the hard times that the family has to go through, but don’t worry about it because you’ll love every minute!

4

The Inbetweeners

«The Inbetweeners» has a huge cult following in the UK, so it’s no surprise that it found its way overseas and onto MTV. Unfortunately, it never made it to its sophomore season. While the show definitely had me laughing at the pure awkwardness exuding from four teenage boys trying to make it through high school, it had its faults; but hey, what show is perfect? The two series are extremely similar to the point of being almost inseparable, so no matter which you watch you’re in for a good time!

5

Prime Suspect

It’s no surprise that this show found such success in the UK having the fab Helen Mirren cast as the leading lady. Sadly, «Prime Suspect» didn’t find the same success in the U.S. and struggled to make it through its only season. I definitely liked watching this show but it strayed too far from the original, which did not work, and may have contributed to its demise. If you’re in the mood for a cop show with a strong female lead (who wouldn’t love that?!) watch the UK version for the full effect.

Being Human

Who doesn’t love vampires, werewolves, and all things supernatural these days? I know I do. In 2011, two years after the British version premiered, «Being Human» found its’ home on Syfy. The show features a ghost, a werewolf, and a vampire living together trying to live normal lives. Being Human is filled with drama, comedy, and can be a bit sexy – the perfect combination!

7

Queer as Folk

«Queer as Folk» had a controversial start across the pond, but was a perfect fit for Showtime. It fit in so well that it lasted more than double the amount of time that it’s British counterpart. Filled with sex, romance, and memorable characters, this show set out to give a glimpse into what being gay in the UK was really like. Unfortunately, the show didn’t do as well as expected, but fortunately found a home and made a lasting impression on viewers over here. If you’re ever in the mood for a good drama, this is your show.

Now, these aren’t the only American TV shows adapted from British shows; the list could go on for a lot longer! Did any of them really surprise you? Can you think of any others?

The Inbetweeners & Sherlock

LOVED being human! so sad when it finished :(

Sorry but our shows are great as they are American version is not the same ie the office it's the Brits wit and humour that make these great uk shows they should have been left alone

Out of this whole list, I've only watched Being Human, the US version and I'm excited for the season 3 premiere on the 14th!

I hate how Queer As Folk was such a great television show and when American viewers watched it they called it "immoral" and "terrible" it's one of my personal favourites

The Office is definitely worth a watch
