Dirty Harry - “do You Feel Lucky, Punk?”

On iTunes: itunes.apple.com

This line from Dirty Harry is one of the most famous lines in pop culture. It’s constantly quoted by comedians to this day, especially since the scene in the movie was so intense, and Clint Eastwood had that bad boy, don't-mess-with-me kind of appeal. It was perfect. But, if you think that was what he actually said, think again! The real line is: "I know what you're thinkin'. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?" I guess it was easier to paraphrase this iconic passage than to say all of that, huh? It definitely surprised me when I heard the misquote wasn’t the real thing. So, there’s no way this wouldn’t end up on my list of famously fumbled movie quotes.

2

Star Wars Episode V: the Empire Strikes Back - “Luke, I Am Your Father.”

On Amazon: amazon.com

If you’ve never seen Star Wars, then you’ve probably heard this quote and thought that it actually happened that way. Honestly, I was totally in that category too. When I finally saw it and realized that Darth Vader never said it quite that way, it sort of ruined my whole idea of the scene before I’d even seen it! What Darth actually said was: “No, I am your father.” I was so surprised and shocked that he never said it that way. But, pop culture and the media have a way of making lines stand out, and I have to admit, they did a darn good job.

3

Apollo 13 - “Houston, We Have a Problem.”

On iTunes: itunes.apple.com

Apollo 13 was such a great movie. It did so well at portraying space missions, impending failure, but eventual triumph. It's surely a movie America (or the citizens of any other countries who’ve viewed it) won’t soon forget. This line has been said countless times in other movies, shows, pretty much any area of media. But, I hate to break it to you, those words were actually said slightly differently. Actual quote: "... Ah, Houston, we've had a problem.” Though it was changed for the masses, I suppose the original wording is essentially the same and just as iconic.

4

Dracula (1931) - “I Want to Suck Your Blood.”

On iTunes: itunes.apple.com

Most people attribute this iconic vampire with this famous line, but the funny thing is, it was never said at all, in any sort of way in the original movie! I guess people assumed that he said this because 1. he is a vampire and 2. he drinks blood. It’s pretty self-explanatory really. It’s a simple 1+1 way to come up with such a memorable quote. Either way, I was surprised it was never said, but whomever came up with it, kudos to them!

5

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - “ Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who is the Fairest of Them All?”

On iTunes: itunes.apple.com

This one really hit me right in the childhood. That line is so great. It’s dripping with vanity, but I just love it. I was so surprised to learn that it wasn’t actually said that way too. I even went as far as to watch a clip of that scene to make sure the research I had done for this article was right! But alas, it was. The original line is: “Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?” Though it isn’t all that different, I prefer to remember it the way everyone else does. At least, for my childhood’s sake.

Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home - “Beam Me up, Scotty.”

On iTunes: itunes.apple.com

Some people may not know anything about Star Trek. But, for those that do, I’m sure that you’ve heard this famously fumbled quote before. It’s one of the most memorable lines from Star Trek. It is even uttered in the newer version that came out this year. However, the real quote was a little different. Original line: "Scotty, beam me up.” It’s only a minor change, but I guess that minor change really makes a difference when the media wants to coin a catchphrase!

7

Star Wars Episode IV: a New Hope - “ May the Force Be with You.”

On Amazon: amazon.com

I know, I know, another Star Wars one. But, I had to do it. Star Wars is so iconic that it is literally in its own category. This line, believed to be uttered by Obi-Wan Kenobi, is said so many times in pop culture, that even children might know it. Fun fact: he never said it that way! Though he did say a variation, it isn’t quite what you expected. Real line: "Remember, the Force will be with you always." It’s pretty similar. However, in a later Star Wars film, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) actually does say that it that way verbatim. Crazy, right?

8

The Graduate - "Mrs. Robinson, Are You Trying to Seduce Me?"

This is a movie that is not only super popular, but it's got some really quotable lines! Have you ever found yourself quoting this particular line? Well, this line is wrong! The actual movie quote is: "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?". I never knew that!

9

Jaws - "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat!"

Jaws is definitely an iconic movie and it is packed with lines that everyone in the world quotes! Did you know that this particular line is constantly misquoted? The actual line is: "You're gonna need a bigger boat!"

10

The Wizard of Oz - "Toto, I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore."

The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies and I've got to tell you, I had no idea I'd been misquoting it forever! The actual quote is: "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

11

Frankenstein - "He's Alive!"

Who knew that something that was created so long ago would constantly be misquoted by everyone in the world? This movie is amazing, but girls and guys, it's not "He's Alive!" it's "It's Alive!".

12

Field of Dreams - "if You Build It, They Will Come."

Another iconic movie that most people quote, but half of the time they quote it wrong! If you really want to seem smart, go ahead and use the actual line, which is: "If you build it, he will come."

13

Silence of the Lambs - "Hello, Clarice."

Finally, an all-time favorite movie of mine is Silence of the Lambs and I thought for sure I had a lot of lines down -- especially one as simple as the greeting from Hannibal to Clarice, but I was wrong! The actual line is: "Good evening, Clarice."

All of these movie quotes have always resonated with me whenever I thought about iconic or popular movie lines. I was pretty shocked to learn that they’ve been so frequently fumbled! These are only a few of the lines that the general public has gotten wrong. There are plenty of others, though to list them all would be quite exhausting. Are there any famously fumbled movie quotes that you want to add?
