9 Inspiring Underdog Movies You'll Love ...

Underdog Movies provide hope and inspiration in all kinds of situations. The prevailing thought is that most underdog movies are based around sports, and while quite a lot of them are, I've compiled a list that proves they're not all sports movies. Whether you want to get the girl (or boy) of your dreams, prove yourself, or simply stand up for who you are and what you believe in, I guarantee you'll get a healthy dose of inspiration from all of these fantastic underdog movies.

1. Forrest Gump

This is one of my favorite underdog movies. It's funny, several of the movies on this list showed up on my list of inspirational movies, too. I think that's because underdog stories are so inspiring. You can relate to them. Like with Forrest – you may never utter the words, β€œlife is like a box of chocolates,” but I bet you can relate to how it feels to be an outsider.

2. Billy Elliot

I adore Billy Elliot. The story in general just speaks to me. Billy's an underdog because no one wants him to go after his dream. They ridicule him for it, and want him to do something else entirely. But he's not down with that, and his perseverance pays off.

3. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Michael Cera is the king of underdogs, and I love him for that. This is one of my favorite underdog movies simply because who doesn't know what it feels like to get dumped on, constantly? Who doesn't know what it feels like to go after someone that hard? Of course, it's also a wicked awesome flick, and that doesn't hurt.

4. 8 Mile

If I had to pick one end all, be all favorite film about an underdog, this would be it. I love me some Eminem, and I've always loved this movie. Since I lived near Warren, MI, for a year or so, and since I've been listening to Eminem's work since it was still underground, his story has always intrigued me. Seeing it on the big screen, and knowing the end result, was amazing. Not everyone agrees with what he says, not everyone understands what he really feels, but still, you can't deny that he's clawed his way up and worked hard for his successes.

Angus is another one of my favorite underdog movies. In high school, this was like my go-to. I love the character of Angus, I love his grandfather, I love the message, and I love the climaxing scenes. Seriously, Angus! You make your environment adapt to you!

I remember watching this with my parents when I was just a little girl. I've had a closet crush on little Sean Astin for years, and this movie was just wonderful. I don't care a bit for football, but this film made me want to go to Notre Dame for years. Sometimes when I need a little motivation, I still chant, β€œRudy, Rudy, RUDY!” under my breath.

7. A League of Their Own

Like I said, I tried to stay away from sport themed underdog movies, but a few of them just had to make the list. Including this one. There are a ton of underdog films based around baseball, like Angels in the Outfield or Major League – both of which I like lots – but this one is just phenomenal. The cast, the story, the acting, the Tom Hanks – I've seen this a million times and I could watch it a million more. The first women's baseball league was truly inspirational, and there are lots of interesting stories behind it -- but this movie makes a great start if you're interested!

Hook might seem like a strange choice, but think about it for a minute. It's about an aging, overweight, out of shape Peter Pan going back to Neverland, to fight a relatively svelte (and still inexplicably hot) Captain Hook. He can't fight, he can't pretend, and he almost kills Tinkerbell before he even gets started. How is he ever going to get his kids back? Well...

9. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

I am such an LOTR fangirl, I swear. These three are quintessential underdog movies. No one thinks they're going to live, let alone get rid of the one ring. A few hobbits? Really? But they underestimate the power of hobbit love … and Legolas's awesome archery skills. Also, I'm hopelessly in love with Elijah Wood. Hopelessly.

I just really love underdog movies, mainly because I've always related with them. I mean, I think the same can be said for anyone who's ever set foot inside a high school, really. You're always the underdog, even if you're the most popular girl in school. Underdog movies give you hope, they let you know that coming out on top really is possible. There are many ways to be an underdog – it doesn't have to involve playing sports, as you can see. Furthermore, there are underdog movies that can inspire anyone. Let me know your favorite underdog films, but why don't you also share an experience when you've felt like an underdog?
