I love the cold openings from “The Office.” It was actually really hard to just pick seven of them and I thought about it for a really long time before I picked these. I enlisted the help of the internet and a fellow “The Office” fan to bring you this list. So here are seven must see cold openings from “The Office.”
1. The Stanley One
I can’t watch this one without cracking up! Stanley is a character that stays in the background most of the time, so I was surprised that this would be so funny. Maybe that’s why it worked though. The writers paint Stanley as a very nonchalant character who just doesn’t care about much, so it’s perfect that he would be oblivious to things going on around him. This is definitely one of my favorite cold openings from “The Office.”
2. Jim Dresses as Dwight
The Jim/Dwight dynamic is always fun to watch. While a few of the openings on this list have to do with the two of them, this is my absolute favorite. John Krasinski does an awesome impression of the Dwight character. The first time I saw this I remember having to rewind (thank you DVR) and watch it again because it was so funny. If you watch “The Office” and didn’t love this scene then I’d be very confused. It’s a great scene to highlight the hilarity of their relationship.
3. Letters from Future Dwight
Another funny Jim and Dwight one. I really love this one because of the fact that Dwight actually believes he’s getting letters from his future self. I know that Dwight is a little weird and into nerdy/sci-fi stuff, but this is kind of a stretch. Even though it’s unrealistic, it makes me laugh and I love it. I don’t know how the writers come up with this stuff, but I’m sure glad they do!
4. The Singing One
When I first saw this, I thought there would be a musical episode. Sadly, I was wrong, but I still enjoyed watching this opening. I’m not sure what it is about this one that I love. It isn’t funny or silly like all of the others. I think that it’s just really fun to watch. It’s rare that we see a moment where the whole cast is enjoying each other’s company and here we are with a scene that we are supposed to believe the characters worked together to do. What’s not to love?
5. Michael Grilled His Foot
This is a great opening. At first I didn’t think it would be so great and then Michael explains how he grilled his foot. The way he says that he doesn’t have a butler makes me think that he believes that he should have one. There are plenty of Michael centric openings that I could have put on this list, but this one really stands out in my mind. I mean, come on, he grilled his foot and is calling Pam because he still wants to come in for work. I just love Michael Scott.
6. Wrapped Desk
This is the last Jim and Dwight one, I promise! I can’t help that a lot of the openings are centered on the two of them! I think part of why I love this one is because I really didn’t know where they were going with it. There’s so much thought that goes into these pranks that Jim does on Dwight. I really wonder how the writers come up with them and it makes me wonder about Jim as a character. These openings aren’t supposed to trigger thought provoking questions in the audience’s mind, but somehow that just happened to me. Anyway, this is hilarious and needs to be watched.
7. Screen Saver
My favorite part about this opening is that I can relate. I have done the exact same thing countless times. If you haven’t then you’re lucky because it is really frustrating. I think it’s brilliant that the writers took something that so many people do and made it even funnier by putting it with Michael being completely oblivious to the fact that they’re not listening to him. This is definitely one of the funniest openings to the show. I just love it.
There are so many good openings! I really struggled to narrow this list down! Which openings are your favorites? Do you disagree with any of these?
