By Cassandra

Film fanatics will be overwhelmed and enthused by the upcoming onslaught of the most anticipated movies of 2014. Many films will debut in diverse genres, ranging from action to romance. I'm thrilled at the prospect of new superhero films (as discussed in a previous post). With the amount of movies released with high gross ticket sales this year alone, 2014 will certainly have big shoes to fill. It doesn't hurt that each film is backed by an incredibly talented cast and production team! Take a look at some of the most anticipated movies of 2014 and see which one catches your fancy.

1 Hercules: the Legend Begins

I've always been intrigued by books, films and TV shows that explore medieval literature; I am delighted to see that "Hercules: The Legend Begins" is one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. In this new adaptation of the life of the Greek demi-god, Prince Hercules is unaware of his true identity and will be forced to make a choice that could change everything that he has come to know. Starring Kellan Lutz and Gaia Weiss, I can't wait to see this new twist on a classic tale.

2 Fifty Shades of Grey

Despite just officially casting the lead actors, this next film is slated for a 2014 release. Based on the novel with the same title, this will tell the story of a young journalist and her many romantic encounters with a mysterious business mogul. While I've never read any of the books in the trilogy, I may catch this film as one of my favorite actors (Jamie Dornan) has just been cast as Christian Grey; I'll just have to watch "Sons of Anarchy" for my fill of Mr. Charlie Hunnam.

3 The Monuments Men

Written and directed by critically-acclaimed actor George Clooney, “The Monuments Men” focuses on the rescue missions of soldiers who attempt to recover art pieces stolen during World War II. Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Cate Blanchett, this take on a WWII platoon seems interesting.

4 The Giver

I remember reading and falling in love with this book in the sixth grade. “The Giver” explores the lasting effects of a society that attempts to erase all of the pain and suffering in the world, only for everything to come crashing down as a young boy discovers the truth. I'm both nervous and excited to see the film adaptation of this wonderful book. I really hope that the writers and production team do this intricate and innovative book justice.

5 Maleficent

Disney lovers will be happy to hear that there will be a new adaptation based on the tale of Sleeping Beauty. However, the twist is that it will be told from the point of view of Maleficent. I will definitely be first in line to see this spin-off!

6 The Fault in Our Stars

John Green's novel "The Fault in Our Stars" took the literary world by storm with its raw and insightful nature. It will explore the relationship between two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and the obstacles they face.

7 Veronica Mars

One of many anticipated films to be released in 2014 is "Veronica Mars". Based on the popular TV show, it will feature an A-list cast including Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, James Franco, Justin Long and Jamie Lee Curtis. While the plot has not been revealed yet, I am positive that it will be a hit!

8 DIvergent

Based on the famous trilogy by Veronica Roth, Divergent is anticipated to be one of the biggest films to hit the screen this year. With an already huge and dedicated fan base, the film has been receiving continuos support ever since its earliest developmental stages. The film is set in a dystopian society which is divided into four factions but things begin to take a different turn as the main protagonist, Beatrice Prior finds out more about herself and the government.

9 Captain America: the Winter Soldier

The first Captain America movie definitely caused quite a buzz, so it is no surprise that people cannot wait for the second film to hit the big screen. In this second establishment of Captain America, Steve Rogers will struggle to find his role in the modern world and attempt to save it from the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. We expect nothing less than great effects, suspense, and a thrilling story line.

10 22 Jump Street

If you have already seen 21 Jump Street, you will understand the craze that is going around the continuation of this story. The first movie has proven how engaging, entertaining and outrageous the characters are, so it is nice to get a glimpse of what these two undercover officer are up to since we last saw them. So mark your calendars!

11 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Back in 2011, we got the chance to get the know the story of one ape by the name of Caesar, well fast forward three years and we can pick up from where his story left off. However this movie will mainly focus on the full-out war between humanity and Caesar's pack of apes after the simian plague has hit the earth. I don't know about you, but I will be one of the first to hit the theaters once this movie gets released.

12 Neighbors

Looking for a great comedy to look forward to in 2014? Well look no further because this is not something you want to miss. Not only does this movie have an outstanding cast consisting of Seth Ronin, Zac Efron, Dave Franco and Rose Byrne but it also doesn't lack in a well developed storyline. The whole movie is set around unexpected difficulties of a couple with a newborn baby when a fraternity decides to move into the neighboring house.

13 The Amazing Spider-Man 2

This latest installment in the blockbuster Spider-Man series is set to come out in May of 2014. And boy, we cannot wait!
