The only thing I love better than a book that makes me cry is a movie that does, and so often the movies that make me cry the most are the ones with weddings in them. It doesn't have to be a sad movie or even a drama – plenty of the wedding scenes found in romantic comedies and the like can make me cry, too. I'm just ridiculously sentimental that way! In light of the recently passed royal wedding, I decided to make a list of the most tear-worthy movie weddings. Feel free to add to it!
1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding: Tula and Ian
There's no reason in the world I should consider the ceremony here a tear-worthy movie wedding – but I do. It doesn't matter that the title alone tells that there is, without question, going to be a wedding. Tula and Ian went through so much, and there was something so realistic yet dreamy about their relationship, that every time I get to the wedding scene near the end, I cry like an absolute child. The ceremony itself is just gorgeous, and if I didn't know who Nia's real “Ian” was, I'd insist she needed to be married to John Corbett!
2. Gone with the Wind: Scarlett and Rhett
This movie has absolutely no happy endings at all. However, even though I've read the book and even though it's one of the best movies ever, I still hold out hope every time Scarlett finally marries Rhett. As you can see, in this instance, it's not even the wedding scene so much, because you don't get a lot of that. Rather, it's the proposal that always gets to me – so even though I kind of cheated, I still had to include it!
3. Pride and Prejudice: Miss Bennet and Mr. Darcy
Oh man. This tears me up every single time – but only when it's the Colin Firth version. All the rest of them can go hang, as far as I'm concerned! I know it's a double wedding, but I don't care. For me, the ceremony between Miss Bennet and the delicious Mr. Darcy is the most tear-worthy movie wedding ever in the world. I get teary eyed every single time – but that's partly because I so wish to be in Elizabeth's place.
4. Sense and Sensibility: Marianne and Colonel Brandon
Here, I refer solely to the version that has Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman. Again, I know they're going to get together – I've seen it a thousand times. It doesn't matter, though. Every single time they come out of that church, finally wed, my eyes start leaking. I don't know what it is about Alan Rickman, either, but I adore him almost as much as I love Colin Firth.
5. Ever after: Danielle and Prince Henry
Here's another case where I'm kind of cheating, but I don't care. I love this movie, I think it's one of the best interpretations of the Cinderella fairytale that's ever been made. When Henry finally comes and rescues Danielle, and you know they're to be married, that is the very best part for me. I can't ever see this particular scene without utterly bawling my eyes out – even though I've probably seen the film twenty times or something.
6. Sweet Home Alabama: Melanie and Jake
This movie is adorable, it's absolutely adorable, and it makes me laugh all throughout it. At the end, however, it makes me cry bushels. Once more, you don't actually see the wedding, but it still happens, and that's cool, because it's that scene on the beach in the pouring rain that starts to waterworks. If I had a little country boy like Josh Lucas, I wouldn't ever want to kiss anyone else, either. Then again, even though the Better Half isn't South-un quality, y'all, I still never want to kiss another person.
7. Mamma Mia: Donna and Sam
This is another of the most tear-worthy movie weddings ever. I love this movie so much. I know I should maybe be a purist and favor the original show, but I don't, I can't help it. I mean, this has Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Amanda Seyfried, it's like I've died and gone to heaven. And even though I'm not Pierce Brosnan's biggest fan, I cry every time Donna and Sam take the place of Sophie and Sky.
8. Romeo + Juliet: Juliet and Romeo
Okay, I know this is cheesy. Everyone in the world knows Romeo and Juliet get married. However, this is my favorite version of the story – and the wedding scene is my favorite part. I'm pretty sure part of the reason I get silly over it is because of that gorgeous rendition of “When Doves Cry” – which, incidentally, can be found on Volume II of the soundtrack.
I know there are tons more tear-worthy movie weddings, but I tell you what, it was hard to think of them! All I know is that these were the ones that came to mind when I thought about what made me cry the most. What movie weddings and proposals make you shed a tear?
