Holiday Movies can really bring you into the season. Touching holiday movies, especially, can go a long way toward reminding you what this time of year is all about. A touching movie based around the Christmas season can remind you that it's not all about presents, decorations, parties, and general commercialism. Don't get me wrong, I love decorating the house, I adore finding just the right gifts for my family and friends, and I definitely enjoy getting gifts myself. But sometimes we can all do with a reminder of why we should be thankful. If you're looking for a little inspiration, just watch a few of these touching holiday movies – you really shouldn't miss them!
1. The Polar Express
When it initially came out, no one was quite sure about this film, but in the seven years since, it's become one of those holiday movies you just can't miss. I mean, it has the power to make you believe in Santa Claus again, even if you're 28. Plus, it's full of Tom Hanks. What more do you want?
2. Joyeux Noel
Left to my own devices, I never would have watched this film. My dad has a penchant for war movies, however, and when I'm visiting my parents, I will even suffer through countless reruns of Star Trek and The Waltons to spend time with him. We watched this together and both shed more tears than we would like to admit. You wouldn't think the story of a ceasefire during World War II could be so touching – but it is.
3. A Christmas Carol
There's nothing like a good dose of Dickensian horror to remind you that you should feel blessed this time of year. The original version of the film, starring Alastair Sim, is the only literal adaptation of the story I will ever watch. This is black and white at its best, and unquestionably one of the most popular holiday movies of all time.
4. Miracle on 34th Street
The original of Miracle on 34th Street isn't far behind, though. You can't not watch this during the holidays. Do not, I repeat do not, watch the remake made in 1994. It is utter dreck compared to this gem – which, again, can make you believe in Santa, no matter how many times you watch it.
5. It's a Wonderful Life
I actually know people who will fight about whether this is the best holiday movie, or if the honor goes to Miracle on 34th Street. I think they're both fantastic for different reasons. This one is a staple, and a classic, because it can show you what's really important, especially around the holidays. Plus I adore Jimmy Stewart.
6. The Bishop's Wife
This, too, shows that you should be grateful for what you have – on both sides. I think that not falling in with Cary Grant classifies as a true Christmas miracle myself. My favorite scene? When they decorate for the holiday!
7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
All right, so this seems like a weird choice for a list of the most touching holiday movies, but I've always found the Grinch touching. I love the message! I've always adored the animated special, and I thought the theatrical version was just great. Plus you get to see Taylor Momsen before she started going through her goth phase!
8. While You Were Sleeping
Yes, this is a romantic comedy – and a good one, in my humble opinion! I just like the magic of the movie. It's completely and utterly unlikely, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock, and that family was just something else.
I love watching really good holiday movies with my family – the black and white ones, especially! There's nothing like curling up on the couch with my favorite people and my pets and watching the holiday movies we all love most. Whether it's an old classic or a modern film, what are some of your favorite holiday movies, and with whom do you most enjoy watching them?
