2. The Color Purple (1985)

Is this one of the greatest films ever to have not won an Oscar? Despite receiving 11 nominations, this masterpiece from Stephen Spielberg is a tour de force in emotion, drama, hardship, love, incest and oh so much more. Follow the fate of sisters Celia and Nettie as they endure everything life in early 1900s America has to throw at them. Based on the outstanding novel by Alice Walker, if you haven’t yet seen this movie (or read the book), all I can say is … why?
