7 Absolutely Swoon-Worthy Period Drama Men and the Actors That Brought Them to Life ...

I am a huge sucker for period drama men. They're so charming and proper, and let me just say that most of them can wear the crap out of a cravat (as you can see, I'm less proper than the period drama men that I'm swooning for.) So, when I'm watching a period drama, I'm really critical of the actors playing my favorite men. These are the men that took their roles to heart and really brought my favorite period drama men to life!

1 Colin Firth: Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice

Talk about a swoon worthiest of swoon worthy period drama men. That scene with him and the swim in the pond is still being talked about, almost 20 years later! Colin Firth brought the proud arrogance of Mr. Darcy to life, but he also brought his sweet, loving side to life. In my eyes, Colin Firth is Mr. Darcy so when I read the book, I picture him in my head!

Frequently asked questions

2 JJ Feild: Mr. Tilney, Northanger Abbey

JJ Feild: Mr. Tilney, Northanger Abbey Buy it here on iTunes:

Northanger Abbey is kind of Jane Austen light brew. It's a little more... silly than Ms. Austen's other books but, JJ Feild made me fall even more in love with Mr. Tilney, a man willing to forsake his father and fortune in order to be with a girl who, let's face it, was a little naive for the majority of their time together. JJ Feild made us see Mr. Tilney as the man in love that he was supposed to be and, he's pretty easy on the eyes if I do say so myself.

3 Rupert Penry-Jones: Captain Wentworth, Persuasion

I know that this list is seeming a bit Austen heavy BUT, the woman knew how to write the perfect man. Captain Wentworth is so cold in the beginning, and it isn't until about 30 minutes before the movie ends that we see his soft side but boy howdy, I don't think anyone could play aloof and still attractive better. Rupert Penry-Jones really brought the loving hopeful man to life, but more than that he made us fall in love with the incredibly heartbroken man and made us hope against hope he would wind up with the woman he wanted.

4 Matthew Macfadyen: Arthur Clennam, Little Dorrit

I LOVE Matthew Macfadyen and although he isn't Mr. Darcy for me, he is definitely Mr. Clennam. He kind of brings a dopey, totally oblivious charm to the character that I adored. He's so kind and so gentle that it's impossible not to just want to hug him (or shake him, depending on the scene.) Plus, he's incredibly handsome, so that helps.

5 Richard Armitage: Mr. Thornton, North & South

Richard Armitage: Mr. Thornton, North & South Buy it here on iTunes:

In the beginning of this movie, Mr. Thornton makes Mr. Darcy look like a soft tempered sweetheart. Never in my life have I had such a 180 turn in feelings for a character. He starts out so abrasive and so.... aggressively strong that it's very hard to like him. But, as time goes on, you begin to see another side of Mr. Thornton and slowly (very slowly) you begin to love him. I honestly can't imagine anyone but Richard Armitage as Mr. Thornton.

6 Michael Fassbender: Mr. Rochester, Jane Eyre

Michael Fassbender: Mr. Rochester, Jane Eyre Buy it here on iTunes: itunes.apple.com
First of all Mr. Fassbender seems to have the ability to bring any character he plays to life just beautifully. But he brought it and then some when he played Mr. Rochester. He had intensity, he had that masculine grouchiness that Mr. Rochester is supposed to exude AND, he was so sexy. No one will ever be able to touch his performance as Mr. Rochester for me; he set the bar pretty darn high.

7 Alan Rickman: Col. Brandon, Sense and Sensibility

Alan Rickman: Col. Brandon, Sense and Sensibility Buy it here on iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Professor Snape has NOTHING on Colonel Brandon. Not only is he the perfect, most thoughtful man, he was looked over by the woman he loved and he still stuck around! I spent most of my first few times watching this version shouting at Marianne for going for Willoughby. Sure, Willoughby may have been more passionate and closer to her own disposition, but Colonel Brandon was the thoughtful consistent man that she needed and Alan Rickman brought him to life in a way that no other man could. I'll admit, I have a total crush on Alan Rickman after seeing him in this film.

Well ladies, these are the period men and actors that I find absolutely swoon worthy. Who are some of the men you can't help but have fainting fits over? Let me know down below!
