What Nobody Admits About Why We Love Television

There are countless reasons why I love TV! While some of my personal favorites might seem a bit unique, most of them are feelings that any media lover can relate to. If you are looking for your next obsession, check out these must-watch TV shows to add to your watchlist. Ultimately, I love watching television because of the three reasons: the ultimate escape, the deep character growth, and the thrilling anticipation of what happens next. When we dive into a great series, it is easy to see why I love television so much.

| Reason to Watch | Key Benefit | Perfect Example | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Ultimate Escape | Stress relief and mental break | Lighthearted sitcoms | | Story Development | Deep character and plot arcs | Multi-season dramas | | Building Anticipation | Exciting cliffhangers and buzz | Weekly release thrillers |

1. Escape

Television is one of the many forms of entertainment that can be used as a perfect escape. For example, when my obsession first began, I was a homebody who rarely left the house because of a heavy schoolwork load. For me, TV became the gateway to step out of the repetitive daily grind. This is probably one of the main reasons why I love TV. While escaping reality might not sound like the most productive habit, who doesn't need a little mental break now and then? If you only have a short window to unwind, you can always choose your shows based on the time commitments required for different episodes.

2. Development

A lot of people say that they prefer watching movies over television. Development is the main reason I disagree with them. While there are plenty of best movies to watch when you want a quick, self-contained story, they can feel limited. Sometimes I ask myself, why do I love movies so much? Yet, I always find myself returning to TV because a television series offers so much more space for development. Unlike a movie that might leave you wishing for more background, a TV show lets you learn new details week after week. This gradual storytelling allows for incredible character depth and growth over time.

3. Anticipation

If a show is crafted correctly, it leaves viewers in absolute anticipation of the next season, or even the next episode. Whenever I find a new television show, I love the feeling of counting down the days until the next installment. One series that is legendary for leaving the audience guessing for months is The Walking Dead. When fans are already hyping up the next season just days after a finale, you know the creators have made something truly special.

4. Time

Television is one of the most flexible forms of entertainment available. In the time it takes to sit through a full-length feature film, you can easily watch multiple episodes of a show. While some might see the shorter format as a disadvantage, to me it is a major benefit. It gives you options: you can binge-watch several episodes in one sitting, or quickly catch a single episode during a busy day before returning to your tasks. Reading a book often demands hours of uninterrupted focus, and movies require you to stay put for two hours or more. While I like TV for its convenience, I also appreciate how it balances this speed with rich story development.

5. Something for Everyone

Sure, there is a book, a movie, and a genre of music for everyone, but TV offers a massive variety of content all in one place. Just look at the sheer number of specialized channels dedicated to golf, baseball, travel, shopping, and food listed on TV Guide. While other mediums touch on these topics, they cannot match the continuous, dedicated coverage that TV provides. The best part is that you are highly likely to stumble upon a show you never expected to enjoy. It is one of the most entertaining things to do when you're bored at home. Here is a quick look at the types of programming you can explore:

  • Live sports and global athletic competitions
  • Immersive travel and cooking docuseries
  • Binge-worthy drama, mystery, and comedy shows

6. Character

Admittedly, memorable characters exist in books and movies too, but TV characters tend to stay with us much longer. Because of a love for a television show that spans several years, you get to watch characters grow, make mistakes, and evolve. It is not just about the individual roles; it is about their families, their relationships, and all the small details that make them feel like real people. As a viewer, it is incredibly easy to form a genuine connection and become invested in their journeys.

7. Repeats

I rarely watch a movie multiple times. Once I know the ending, it is hard to stay engaged, with only a few rare exceptions. On the other hand, rewatching favorite TV episodes is completely natural. Even if you know the outcome of a specific episode, it is just a small piece of a much larger puzzle. It is one of the reasons we love telly so much; you can revisit familiar scenes without spoiling the overarching plot. So why not watch the same episode of the classic comedy Scrubs ten times? It is just as funny the tenth time around!

It is clear that I am a bigger fan of television than most, but our reasons for watching might be very similar. Whether you love and like TV for the comfort it brings or the stories it tells, television love is a universal experience. Do you agree or disagree with any of these points? What is your personal reason for loving your favorite shows?
