Anyone who knows me knows that I love Boy Meets World, so when Girl Meets World was announced, I was over the moon. However, the pilot underwhelmed me, as well as many people. I didn’t give up on it, though, and since the pilot, Girl Meets World has improved exponentially. If you still doubt the show, though, read on to learn just how it’s living up to its predecessor.
While I can admit that the Girl Meets World pilot did leave much to be desired, the storylines since then have been Boy Meets World reminiscent with a 2014 twist. In particular, an episode dealing with our dependency on technology today would’ve definitely been a storyline if it had been a problem fifteen years ago. It’s a completely different world, but the storylines are still just as real. That being said, don’t expect any episodes about cults and underage drinking. This is the Disney Channel, after all.
Even after all these years, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have easily fallen back into their roles as Cory and Topanga. Even though we last saw them as teenaged newlyweds, they’re now parents to a teenager of their own, and it’s everything we could’ve wanted it to be. Cory is just the father we thought he’d be (neurotic) and Topanga is just the mother we thought she’d be (borderline perfect).
Okay, I’m going to be honest here. Auggie definitely rivals the original Morgan in cuteness. The original Morgan was always so adorable, always there to deliver one-liners perfectly, and always there to inadvertently teach Cory a lesson. Auggie seems to play that role as well, however, I almost think that he does it better. He is the quiet star of the show, and if anyone tries to replace Auggie in season three, I will not be okay with it.
Often, the difference between guy friendships and girl friendships is that girls are more caring and sentimental. However, that was never the case when it came to Cory and Shawn. Cory and Shawn cared about each other more than any other friendship on television during the nineties, and Maya and Riley are living up to that nicely. It helps that Sabrina and Rowan are best friends in real life as well!
Upon seeing the pilot, some Boy Meets World fans gave up on the show. Others gave up after a lack of original Boy Meets World characters. While I was also shocked that Cory and Topanga are not nearly as attached to their best friends as they used to be, I also know what’s coming. So many guest stars are making their way to the show, and soon. Besides the fact that the pilot featured Mr. Feeny, there is one small note in particular that will really make you nostalgic. You may not have noticed, but in the back of Cory’s classroom, there’s a sign that says “Dream. Try. Do Good.” I’ll give you a few minutes to compose yourself.
If I’m being honest, I really did not like Farkle in the beginning. In fact, I was waiting for him to disappear in the same manner as Minkus, considering that Minkus is his father. However, after the pilot, my opinion of Farkle did a complete 180. His friendship with Maya and Riley is exactly the type of friendship I was expecting to see in Girl Meets World.
Take on the World is probably one of Disney’s best theme songs in years. Besides the fact that the theme song is incredibly catchy, you might have noticed that the paper airplane is back and at it again. How’s that for some '90s nostalgia?
