Complicated, messy, heartbreaking, awkward, beautiful, moving, heart-lifting, tear-jerking – all emotions that make them watch worthy. Here are some memorable portrayals of big days in the movies.

The smash hit movie of the smash hit stage show based on the amazing music of ABBA is all about the impending nuptials of a young woman and her one true love. 2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
This comedy from the early 2000s is one of my absolute favorites, a real underrated gem. Sure, just about everything that could go wrong, does go wrong at some point for Toula and her fiancé Ian, but the sheer comedy that her large, loud Greek-American family bring makes it all worth it. Delicious looking food and a whole host of wedding ceremony madness make this one a must see!

3. Bridesmaids (2011)
Though many of the cringe worthy situations in Bridesmaids are definitely not something that you will want to replicate at your own wedding, one thing that the film definitely does do is make you excited for planning our own bridal shower and pre-wedding activities. The thought of getting all of your best girlfriends together to have one last big hurrah in your unmarried state is a rights of passage, and Bridesmaids certainly gives you a few ideas!

4. Muriel’s Wedding (1994)
Yet another marriage related film that involved heavy use of ABBA music! Muriel’s Wedding is an Australian comedy classic starring a young Toni Collette as a woman who is determined to grab the man of her dreams and have a wedding to remember. Of course, it’s not as simple as that, and there are plenty of ups and downs along the way! You’re terrible Muriel!

6. The Sound of Music (1965)
Though marriage is not the central theme of this 1965 classic, Maria and Captain Von Trapp’s wedding at the half way point of the film is a beautiful and memorable scene in cinematic history. With the beautiful dress, the stunning cathedral, the singing nuns and all of the back-story that goes along with it, there are few wedding scenes more satisfying in film!

7. The Wedding Singer (1998)
I am so not a fan of Adam Sandler but this movie is definitely his best. It’s so 80s and so … well just so 80s. Drew Barrymore is an adorable sweetheart who definitely deserves Sandler’s buffoonish love interest over the ghastly, slime ball, yuppy fiancé, Glen. The sound track is awesome and the appearances of Steve Buscemi and Billy Idol are little gems.

8. Father of the Bride (1991)
The movie that made fathers of brides-to-be everywhere blanch at the words “wedding planner”. Not only having to accept his little princess has grown up and there’s another important man in her life, uptight, wallet-bound Steve Martin has to contend with a wildly over-the-top wedding planner who thinks swans are the perfect accessory to a simple home wedding.

9. The Corpse Bride (2005)
A little something out of the ordinary to finish, one of Tim Burton’s better recent films featuring the voice talents of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter. In true weird and wonderful animated Burton style, a man who is happily engaged to the woman he loves, inadvertently marries a dead woman instead. Of course! What else would you expect!?
