America's Next Top Model gave the world 22 cycles in 12 years, averaging two seasons of dramatic makeovers, epic meltdowns, and increasingly contrived melodrama—oh yes, but also fierce looks, fabulous photos, and some genuinely amazing contestants. From the best ANTM makeovers to the worst ANTM makeovers that left models in tears, the series defined reality television for a generation. I'll confess, I stopped watching after the absolute cluster-mess that was the All-Star cycle when Allison Harvard got robbed, but I recently caught a rash of reruns and realized I really miss the show. Where else on television could we witness the most dramatic ANTM makeovers of all time alongside unscripted panel chaos? Here is a nostalgic look back at the most unforgettable moments in Top Model history.
19 Most Dramatic ANTM Makeovers, Meltdowns, and Controversies of All Time
1. Elyse's Epic Rant
As meltdowns go, this one was both the tamest and the most intelligent rant ever witnessed on ANTM. Remember how innocent Cycle 1 was? This also cemented my enduring love for Elyse Sewell – seriously, if you were enamored of this smart, feisty pixie girl, too, check out her old LiveJournal!
2. Shandi Cheats
Here's a Cycle 2 gem featuring fan favorite Shandi Sullivan. Oh, I loved Shandi. I felt so bad for her during the overseas trip to Milan, but she owned what happened and that's pretty awesome. The emotional aftermath of Shandi cheating on ANTM remains one of the most raw, honest human moments in reality TV history.
3. Everybody Almost Dies
This is absolute nightmare fuel. When production designed runway challenges, they pushed physical limits to the extreme.
Some of the most terrifying runway concepts included:
- Walking on water in slippery floating bubbles
- Navigating blindfolded runways in massive heels
- Walking towering vertical runways suspended by harnesses
Seeing contestants brave these extreme conditions proved just how far the show would go for dramatic television.
4. Yaya Steps up
I am so glad Yaya DaCosta is showing up in more and more movies and TV shows. I adored this gorgeous goddess – and still do not think she should have had to apologize. Telling her everyone pegged her as "going for the typical African hat" and tries to "prove her Africanness." Panel, please.
5. Brownie-gate
The melodrama used to be so simple! Hands up, though, who loves Toccara's shade? Yaya's reaction is epic, too—she's wearing that shirt for all of us.
| Cycle | Contestant & Moment | Category | | --- | --- | --- | | Cycle 1 | Elyse Sewell's Closet Rant | Unfiltered Meltdown | | Cycle 3 | Yaya DaCosta's Panel Defense | Iconic Grace | | Cycle 6 | Jade Cole's Monologue | Unforgettable Exit | | Cycle 18 | Louise Watts vs. Kelly Cutrone | Judge Confrontation |Looking back, these classic household moments defined early reality television entertainment.
6. Cassandra Quits
Bye, Cassandra! The Cassandra ANTM makeover drama reached its boiling point in Cycle 5 when Tyra demanded she chop off another inch of hair to mimic Mia Farrow's iconic look. Cassandra chose her personal autonomy over competition pressure and walked away, creating one of the earliest makeover standoffs on the show.
7. Jade
Just … just Jade. Dubbing herself the "undiscovered supermodel," Jade Cole dominated Cycle 6 with unmatched confidence and unforgettable quotes. Much like Elyse's iconic Cycle 1 rant, Jade delivered pure entertainment value every single episode.
8. And Also Jade's Exit
Every time I see Kenya Moore on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," I think to myself that she is simply no Jade. Jade's final poem, finger snaps, and departure remain legendary in reality television history.
9. Tyra Passes out
In Cycle 6, this dramatic collapse served as the introduction to the acting challenge—you know, to prove Tyra is a committed actress. The contestants lost their minds in panic before Tyra popped back up announcing the lesson. Did anyone watching really fall for it?
10. So Does Rebecca
I still … I still wonder about this. Unlike Tyra's theatrical fall, Rebecca Epley suddenly collapsed mid-judging panel in Cycle 4 due to medical reasons, shocking the judges and fellow models alike. It still looks startling to rewatch.
11. Celia Snitches
Snitches get stitches, Celia. Stepping forward during elimination panel in Cycle 12 to inform Tyra that Tahlia wanted to leave was a risky move that backfired immediately. Similar to Yaya DaCosta's iconic response to panel critiques, speaking up out of turn at panel rarely goes according to plan.
12. The Granola Bar/Energy Drink Debacle
I don't … I don't even know. Missing snacks and missing energy drinks caused full-blown house investigations in Cycle 5, proving that minor living space disputes make for high-level television drama.
13. Brittany Loses It Utterly
Brittany Hatch's meltdown in Cooper Square during Cycle 8 was unforgettable. She blamed everyone else for her timing issues when her cab driver was late, screaming on the street in front of industry professionals. This meltdown no doubt contributed to her inevitable elimination. I was pulling for her, too—she was a lovely model, even with her unfortunate weave, but that attitude sealed her fate.
14. The Magical Disappearing Amber
So, Amber. Yeah. Cycle 13 contender Amber DePace dazzled audition rounds with her extreme enthusiasm and praise, only to withdraw right before moving into the model house due to personal reasons.
15. Runways Are Dangerous
The ever-increasing drama depicted in ANTM's final runway shows pretty much guaranteed a casualty or two.
Key safety factors models had to overcome included:
- Extremely steep incline surfaces
- Intense wind machines blowing heavy couture garments
- High-concept footwear with zero traction
Watching contestants push through dangerous runway conditions became a staple of every season finale.
16. Louise Vs. Kelly Cutrone
Yas. YAS. YAAASSSS. When British contestant Louise Watts clashed with fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone during Cycle 18 (British Invasion), tension reached an all-time high, resulting in Louise walking off set.
17. Saleisha Gets a Bowl Cut
Why? Why? The controversial Saleisha ANTM makeover gave her a rounded mushroom haircut that sparked endless fan debate. This questionable hair transformation makes her eventual victory over runner-up Chantal Wiertz even harder to understand for many viewers.
18. Tyra Shuts down Denzel's Tired Rhetoric
So, not only did Denzel have one of the worst makeovers ever (that lace-front beard!), he also spouted stereotypical comments about male models in fashion. Bravo to Tyra Banks for shutting it down directly at judging. Much like Jade's legendary quotes, Tyra's speech remains a defining moment of judge accountability.
19. But … but, Tyra …
And the end-all, be-all of ANTM meltdowns belongs to … Tyra herself. "I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!" remains the most famous viral outburst in reality show history. I wonder if Tiffany Richardson still hears TyTy shouting in her dreams.
Will you miss America's Next Top Model? I think it was beyond time to retire the franchise, but I still look back on past episodes, contestants, and winners quite fondly. Yoanna House and Naima Mora remain my all-time favorites, I am still angry Nik Pace didn't beat Nicole Linkletter, and I shed a tear when Adrienne Curry first married and then divorced Christopher Knight.
