7 Best Disney Voice over Performances ...

By Neecey

We’ve become used to our favorite stars featuring in animations, and among the best match up of star to character personality are Disney voice over performances. The person chosen to do the voice over is what gives an animated character its personality, so you want it to be a little bit magical and still believable. Here are some of the Disney voice over performances I believe deliver in spoonfuls.

Shere Khan

The Jungle Book is my absolute favorite Disney movie and I also happen to think it features one of the best Disney voice over performances. British actor George Sanders was the perfect choice for delivering the malevolent, stalking tiger Shere Khan. His deep voice just drips with menace, but it’s oh so silky smooth too and perfectly eloquent.

2

Dory

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Everyone must be looking forward to 2016, when once again our we’ll join our favorite fishy friends on another adventure in Finding Dory. Ellen DeGeneres did such a great job as Dory in Finding Nemo that it’s only right she gets a follow up. As Dory, Ellen gave us everything Dory should be – mercurial, annoyingly chipper, scatty, and slightly neurotic.

3

The Genie

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Give Robin Williams free rein and all hell breaks loose. The man just DOES voices so well. Widely recognized as one of the best Disney voice over performances ever, Robin Williams as the genie in Aladdin is sublime. Is the movie about Aladdin or a big blue genie? You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s all about the genie because he’s a major scene stealer. From his bang-on impressions to the pop culture references, this is a master class in comic timing and delivery.

4

Ursula

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Oh Ursula, what a wicked sea witch you are! You may not have heard of Pat Carroll, who voiced Ursula in The Little Mermaid, and it took those clever folks at Disney a wee time to realize her talents were ripe for belting out those songs (the part was offered to numerous actresses prior to Carroll). Despite not being first-choice, Carroll certainly made Ursula her own, describing her performance as "part Shakespearean actress, with all the flair, flamboyance and theatricality, and part used-car salesman with a touch of con artist.”

5

Bolt

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

John Travolta has a seriously eclectic list of credits to his name. He’s made some blockbuster movies and some real duds too. I like him as Bolt. Somehow, in a story we know to be unbelievable, he makes Bolt believable. Travolta had turned down many requests to voice animated characters but he saw something special in Bolt. The animators captured Travolta’s real-time facial expressions and mannerisms when delivering the dialogue to incorporate them into the character visuals on screen.

Scar

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

I think we can all agree that Matthew Broderick did a great job bringing us Simba, but I think we’ll also concur that Jeremy Irons as Scar is one of the best Disney voice over performances. Scar is so righteously frightening and dastardly fabulous that he scared kids everywhere. His delivery is redolent of the bass tenor villain in an opera – august, booming, yet magically lyrical.

7

Mrs. Potts

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

How exquisite was Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts? These days she’s mostly known as Jessica Fletcher but this is one classy, supremely talented lady with a list of movie, TV and stage credits any actress would drool over. As Mrs. Potts, Angela makes us remember that before she became a teapot she was a motherly, caring, cheery lady who ran the castle kitchen. When it’s Mrs. Potts, a teapot can give a comforting hug, have a warm presence and be a shoulder to cry on.

I know I am going to hear that I haven’t included your favorite Disney voice over performances. I know I left out Billy Crystal as Mike Wazowski (Monsters Inc.), Tom Hanks as Woody (Toy Story), Peggy Lee as Darling (Lady and the Tramp), and Holly Hunter as Elastigirl (The Incredibles) but I had to draw the line somewhere, didn’t I? Is your favorite listed here?
