7 Movies Inspired by Video Games ...
By Lyndsie

I love movies inspired by video games … most of the time. A lot of them are really kind of bad, but because I'm generally a fan of bad movies (The Road to Wellville, anyone?), I tend to like them anyway. That's just a forewarning that some of the films on this list were considered critically bad. That doesn't mean they're not entertaining though, right? So check out some of my favorite movies inspired by video games – both good and bad. Feel free to share your own, and don't worry – I want to hear them even if they're considered bad movies, too!

1. Super Mario Bros

I know! I can't help it though; this is one of my favorite movies inspired by video games. I loved Nintendo, I loved Mario, I loved Bob Hoskins, and I wanted to bear John Leguizamo's children. What can I say? To make matters worse, no one who did this movie liked it. Hoskins and Leguizamo frequently drank together on set; they knew this was going to be an awful movie. And it is, but I love it for its camp value – and Johnny made a hot Luigi, I still stand by that.

2. Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time

Critically, this movie was a dud, but to be honest, I kind of liked it. That might have something to do with context: I saw it for the first time with my dad, we were having a little bonding time and it was just a really great day. It might also have something to do with Jake Gyllenhaal being shirtless throughout. Honestly, I just liked the story; this probably ties in with my inexplicable adoration of The Mummy series somehow.

3. Resident Evil

I have to begin by saying that even though some of the movies are bad, I've thus far at least enjoyed, if not outright loved, every film in the Resident Evil series. It's a mood thing, mainly, and I have an enduring crush on Milla Jovovich. I don't think they need to make any more of these, ever, but if you're looking for some thrilling action and excitement, there are definitely worse ways to kill some time.

4. Lara Croft: Tombraider

Let me also preface this by saying that I actually like all of the Lara Croft movies, but I liked the second one better. For the sake of continuity, however, I'm highlighting the first one. I thought Angelina was perfect to play Lara Croft, I thought the story was exciting, the plot wasn't flat, and Daniel Craig was just awesome – so awesome, of course, that he became our next James Bond.

5. Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat was awesome just because it was based on Mortal Kombat. The soundtrack alone made it the business. I've never really been super into all of the casting choices, but the point is that this movie came out at the perfect time. Mortal Kombat was still a hugely popular video game and the filmmakers and producers capitalized on that perfectly. Of course, looking back on it now, you can easily see a lot of things that could be better, but I think you can say that of most things that came out in the 1990s. Although I've included a lot of sequels in these choices too, by the way, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation gets no mention on here. Just no.

6. Final Fantasy: the Spirits within

I know, I know. I know, seriously. This is not a fantastic, but as a Final Fantasy fan, of course I saw it. I was determined to give it a chance. Although I'm an FF fan, I'm not a fanatic, but even the majority of die-hards hated this movie. I include it for its potential. It could have been really good and it just … wasn't. However, the graphics were pretty awesome, and seriously, there was a lot of potential. Still, I don't know about you, but I'd love to see a film with Tidus.

7. Silent Hill

These games creep me out and the movie did as well. It was not a great movie, but frankly, I found it more chilling than most so-called horror movies these days. I liked the cinematography and the mood more than anything, but then, those are really the only things the film had going for it. The story's confusing, so there's no real tension there. It all comes from the mood. I haven't seen Revelation yet – did they do better? I sort of don't care, because, well, Carrie-Anne Moss, I'll see it anyway.

I just love the fantasy elements in movies that are based on video games. I love seeing how other people envision them, especially when they're live action. Of course, some of them really shouldn't have been made, ever – but I can't really say anything, given my first choice! Now share your own favorites! And tell me, do you think Hollywood should continue making movies inspired by games?

I'm sorry but half of these movies were awful and personally Final Fantasy VII advent children was far better than the spirits within

They're making need for speed into a movie starring aaron paul

Silent hill revelation was pretty good. Just as scary and I liked the characters. The scenery was spot on to the game. Those games scare the crap out of me I can't make to 10 minutes in without shaking lol

I couldn't help but like the Mortal Kombat and Silent Hill movies, largely because I own and genuinely enjoy playing every one of those games that have been released. Ironically I had just stopped playing Mortal Kombat on my N64 and was switching to Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, just before I read this.
