Ever wonder why there are so many similar movies released at the same time? Well according to Twisted Sifter, there are two theories to these coincidences. First is that when two studios own the rights to similar movies scripts, they always try to make the movie and put it out earlier or around the same time as the other studio. This way they are not judged for replicating someone else’s work. Another theory says that releasing similar movies at the same time has shared marketing benefits. Nonetheless this leaves the viewers very torn when choosing between similar movies released at the same time.

1. No Strings Attached & Friends with Benefits
These two films are one of the latest similar movies released at the same time. Both films revolve around the lives of two single individuals who attempt to maintain a physical relationship with no feelings involved. However things begin to get a little more complicated as feelings begin to intrude. The wicked similarity in the plotline of the story is really hard to miss!
2. Antz & a Bug’s Life
The feud between Pixar and Dreamworks began with the release of “Antz” and “A Bug’s Life” in 1998. Both of these insect movies tell a story of one brave and courage ant, who feels like he doesn’t belong in his colony until he falls in love with the princess. Although the ant in each movie faces different obstacles, they both revolt against oppression and prove to be heroes at the end of the day.
3. Shark Tale & Finding Nemo
While most films with uncanny similarities are often referred to as twin movies, I would associate “Shark Tale” and “Finding Nemo” as fraternal twin movies. While both movies explore the world under the sea and have fish protagonists, their themes have clear differences. For example “Finding Nemo” is all about an adventure to reunite with family while “Shark Tale” is about a small fish, who dreams big about becoming a hero.
4. Mirror Mirror & Snow White and the Huntsman
The two movies are adaptations of a Disney animation that was perfected years ago, so it is no surprise that they have almost identical premises. While they did follow the same plot that we are so familiar with, each movie interpreted it in a different manner. For example “Snow White & the Huntsman” is a much darker take on the childhood fairytale, while “Mirror Mirror” is more family friendly.

5. Chasing Libery & the First Daughter
“Chasing Liberty” and “The First Daughter” are two romantic comedies about presidential daughters who feel trapped in the premises of the White House. They long to experience an ordinary life, free of reporters, bodyguards and grand reputation. It’s like these movies are carbon copies of each other! Yes, these are also chick flick movies with a predictable ending, but they are definitely worth watching on those days when you want something light with a dose of romance.

6. After Earth & Oblivion
“After Earth” and “Oblivion” are thematically similar films that take place in a post-apocalyptic future in which most of the Earth is destroyed and uninhabitable. However that is not the only thing these two movies had in common. Although both of them explored the idea of the future of Planet Earth, none of them were able to perfectly execute it.
7. Happy Feet & Surf’s up
“Happy Feet” and “Surf’s Up” are each about a penguin, who stands out among the rest. “Happy Feet” is about a penguin named Mumble who can’t possibly sing like the rest and is therefore scolded for it, but soon finds out that all of his talent went to his feet. While “Surf’s Up” is about an amateur surfer penguin who dream of winning a surfing competition while all the other penguins his age are too busy egg sitting.
Nowadays it is not rare that we find two movies with identical plots released at the same time. While this creates quite a buzz, we can’t resist comparing these movies side by side. Which of these twin movies do you think out-did its opponent?
