1

Transformers

This is one of the most popular robot movies that features quality art CGI. Don’t expect anything profound out of this movie. Expect an underdog story, Megan Fox’s curvaceous figure, and damn cool robot-fights between the Autobots and Decepticons. A good action-adventure fantasy film with nice robot mechanics behind the transformer’s scenes. The jury’s out on whether the follow ups are as good.

2

WALL-E

WALL-E is one of Disney-Pixar’s finest. The creators managed to produce heartfelt emotions and adorable characters out of robots, by using a tad of pathetic fallacy (anthropomorphic fallacy). Nonetheless, the main story arc revolves around sensible treatment of the earth and ensuring that human pollution and waste does not destroy our planet. WALL-E is an adorable robot movie which is the perfect example of the concept “robot love”.

3

The Terminator (1984)

Terminator is a futuristic action-adventure sci-fi movie where a killer humanoid robot from 2029 is sent back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor. Considered to be one of the iconic robot movies, it has some of the most memorable graphic scenes making it one of the most innovative action-adventure films yet. There’s a reason why such a huge franchise is based on this epic original.

4

Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner, based on the sci-fi novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’, is one of the most iconic movies that set a precedent for cyberpunk sci-fi movies. It is set in the future where humans have developed the technology to create humanoid robots, called replicants. Harrison Ford is Deckard, a Blade Runner who is set on a mission to hunt down six replicants who have escaped and are wreaking havoc on Earth. It is considered one of the most thrilling and deep psychological futuristic thrillers that are riveting for many.

5

Short Circuit (1986)

This is a family-film about a robot, number 5, who is in a group of military robots who escapes after being struck by lightning. Number 5 develops self-awareness and consciousness (a bit like WALL-E), but has a fear of being reprogrammed and taken back to the military factory. It’s a riveting and heart-warming robot movie for kids. Number Johnny 5, alive!

I, Robot (2004)

This is supposedly based on the book of the same title by Isaac Asimov, and contains the iconic ‘Three Laws of Robotics’, where a robot is programmed to never harm a human or let a human come into harm’s way. The movie, however, is largely different from the book and has its own story line which features Will Smith as a Chicago police detective who hates the existence of the anthropomorphic robots who act as servants for humans. This movie about robots makes a poignant point about the rapid development of technology and its threat to humans, whilst also exploring the dangers humans can pose onto themselves and their creations.

7

A.I: Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Steven Spielberg directs a movie that offers a dark view of the future, where robots are churned out for human’s use and cruelly burned if they fail to serve their purpose. However, the robots are typically always adults and the story arc follows the creation of the first ever child robot, played by Haley Joel Osment, and his belief that he can be made into a real boy. The Pinocchio-esque story is deep and riveting, whilst playing with the fickleness of human desire.

8

Metropolis (2001)

The final of the robot movies on this list is a Japanese animation, based on a manga of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. It is set in a futuristic city where robots and humans live amongst one another, where robots are usually in a position of servitude or are discriminated against. The robot of interest in this film is a female child called Tima, who was created as a weapon. The movie follows Kenichi, a young boy who comes across Tima and tries to save her, as Rock, the son of Metropolis’ ruler tries to destroy her.

Many of these robot movies share similarities with each other, and this just goes to show the level of anxiety and fascination people have with the existence and potential of robots. They are riveting, iconic and a must-see for anybody who is interested in the possibility that super-advanced robots and humans can coexist. These 8 Riveting Robot Movies are mainly for entertainment purposes, but many contain deep and poignant ethical considerations which is becoming more and more relevant in today’s fast-growing technological world. What are your thoughts about robots?
