Although it may not seem like it, movies with an all female cast are quickly becoming more and more prominent in pop culture. By movies with an all female cast, I mean movies where the main characters are mostly women with a few men peppered in for good measure. Just a few years ago, movies with an all female cast were extremely rare. These days, they’re one of the most popular genres! Grab your girlfriends, check out this list, and then have a girl’s night in and watch a few of these classics!
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a classic coming of age movie about friendship. In fact, it’s one of the rare coming of age friendship movies with an all female cast. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll relate to at least one (but probably all four) of the girls. This movie becomes even better when you learn that all four girls are best friends in real life as well. If you haven’t read the books, read all of them before watching this movie. Consider this a warning; the fifth one (yes, the fifth, it came out a few years ago) may make you cry like you’ve never cried before.
If you’ve never seen Bridesmaids, you may have spent the past few years living under a rock. Featuring some of the funniest women in Hollywood, Bridesmaids will make you laugh until you cry, and then you’ll laugh some more. There are definitely some cringe-worthy moments, but that makes this movie even better. We rarely see women unafraid to do physical comedy, and that’s what makes Bridesmaids so great.
Warning! Pitch Perfect may lead you to believe you can be in an a capella group. You will spend the following two weeks after watching this movie singing the songs to yourself, and you will want to watch it on loop for about a week straight. You’ll fall in love with the quirky characters; you’ll want to be Beca, and you’ll want Jesse to sing to you like he sings to Beca. You will fall in love with this movie and all of the amazing women that make it what it is. If one movie isn’t enough for you, don’t worry; Pitch Perfect 2 is in the works!
As a woman, it’s almost impossible to have never seen at least one episode of Sex and the City. Chances are you’ve seen every episode. You either loved the show or hated it. Either way, you’ll love this movie. The Sex and the City Movie is more about friendship and less about the drama of their everyday lives. Of course, there is a lot of drama happening in this movie, but the focus is definitely on the friendship between the girls. Friendship without cattiness is incredibly rare in media, which is what makes this movie so special.
Clueless is a movie that you want to hate, but can’t help but laugh at. I’m thankful that it was a fictional movie, because I can’t fathom anyone being so dumb, but that’s what makes it so funny! There are more than a few lines that will leave you with sidesplitting laughter. This all woman cast does a fabulous job and executes a wonderful comedic performance.
Mean Girls has an insane amount of female talent. Not only do Lindsey Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried give nearly iconic performances, the queen of comedy herself, Tina Fey, wrote and starred in the film. It’s a classic girls movie, no matter your age, and one that you definitely need to watch during your next girls night in!
The Heat is a newer female comedy, and while the main female cast is small, they are mighty. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy deliver hilarious performances, but it’s also a typical cop movie, making it a rare gem in the spectrum of female comedy. If you’re looking for suspense with a ton of laughs, look no further.
