7 Disney Movies Set in the UK ...

By

There are a number of Disney movies set in the UK. They include live action and animations. They include classic children’s stories and legends, and stories written for the screen. They are among some of the oldest productions and also the most recent. Let’s see how many of the Disney movies set in the UK you have seen.

1. Candleshoe (1977)

Starring Jodie Foster as an American teenager who comes to England to hustle an old lady and find some hidden treasure, Candleshoe is a classic tale where the baddies get their comeuppance. It is one of the live action Disney movies set in the UK and enjoys the setting of a grand old house in the charming countryside. The great English actor David Niven steals the show with his multiple characters.

2. 101 Dalmatians (1996)

There are various versions to choose from but I’m going with the live action one. Basically because this one is the one in which you see lots of London. I will admit though, I do love the animated version because those puppies are so darned cute. Who can resist them as they escape the evil clutches of arch villainess Cruella De Vil.

3. Brave (2012)

On iTunes at itunes.apple.com
One of the more recent Disney movies set in the UK, Brave introduces us to the feisty, red haired Princess Merida, a young woman determined to follow her own path in life despite the obstacles of tradition and family. Featuring the voices of Scotland’s own sons, Billy Connelly and Robbie Coltrane, and a whole host of familiar British names, Brave is a rip roaring adventure in a land of myth and legend.

4. The Sword in the Stone (1963)

I had to look twice when I saw that this movie is now more than 50 years old. The story is a familiar one, and one we’ve seen in many incarnations on the small and big screen down the years. The Sword in the Stone is the story of the boy Arthur Pendragon who would grow up into the legendary king thanks to the education and guiding hand of the wizard Merlin.

5. One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing (1975)

On iTunes at itunes.apple.com
This is one of my favorite Disney movies ever and would be even if it wasn’t set in the UK. It is the madcap adventure of a group of British nannies saving a microfilm from some Chinese secret agents. Only trouble is, the microfilm is hidden in a dinosaur at the British Museum. Poor old dino gets put in a truck and is driven around the streets of London and the British countryside as the nannies save the day. Peter Ustinov is hilarious as the head Chinese agent.

6. Alice in Wonderland (1951)

On iTunes at itunes.apple.com
Technically the adventures of Alice don’t take place in the UK, because practically the entire story takes place in Wonderland, a magical place inhabited by a real motley crew of characters. But we know that Alice lives in England and we know it’s truly amazing what tricks a bored child can get up to on a sunny afternoon. Do you prefer the animated version or the Johnny Depp movie?

7. Mary Poppins (1964)

On iTunes at itunes.apple.com
It was 50 years ago that Mary Poppins flew into the lives of the Banks family and hearts of millions of children around the world. And 50 years later, we’re still enraptured as the streets and rooftops of London ring with the sounds of songs we can’t but help sing along to. Seriously, is there a child (or even an adult) on Earth who doesn’t have Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in their vocabulary?

So come let’s go fly a kite and then come back to applaud the genius entertainment of the Disney movies set in the UK. Do let me know of Disney movies set in your own country or one you want to visit.
