7 Memorable TV Catchphrases ...

Every now and again memorable TV catchphrases come along and leave a mark on its audience whether we know it or not. Not every show has a catchphrase and not every show has a good catchphrase, but some shows have gems that people don’t forget. I don’t know about you, but I love a good quote and it’s even better when they’re repeated so catchphrases are one of my favorite parts of TV. Let’s take a look at seven memorable TV catchphrases.

1

"D’oh!"

I don’t think you have to watch "The Simpsons" to be able to recognize this super famous catchphrase. Out of all of the memorable TV catchphrases, I’d have to say this is probably the one that everyone knows. "The Simpsons" isn’t one of the shows that I watch every week, but even I catch myself throwing out a "D’oh!" every once in a while. This is the best replacement for a swear word that there is on TV – who wouldn’t want to use it?!

2

"Aaaay!"

I love "Happy Days," but I love the Fonz even more. I mean, he’s just so cool. This catchphrase is only two letters and yet it’s used in so many ways on the show. In this short word he manages to express anger, happiness, say that everything is OK, and so much more. I wish I had a way of doing all of that with just two letters. Even a lot people from my generation and younger, who this show predates, know the catchphrase (although sadly, they probably don’t know what show it’s from).

3

"Good Grief."

Oh "Charlie Brown." I have such a soft spot for him. He’s just so sweet and harmless, but can’t seem to catch a break and I always root for the underdog. If you were always feeling down in the dumps "good grief" would be the perfect way to express it. Maybe there aren’t many people who can identify this one as easily as the others, but it’s just as good if not better than some others on this list. The best catchphrases are the ones that can be used in everyday life and this is definitely one of them.

4

"Lucy, I’m Home!"

Who hasn’t said this at least once when walking through the door? If you haven’t, do it next time because it’s so much fun. Well, either it’s fun or I’m weird (it’s probably the latter). "I Love Lucy" is a hilarious show that I just can’t get enough of. I’ve seen every episode multiple times and it never gets old. Not only does it have some of the most famous actors, characters, and episodes, but also has some great catchphrases.

5

"How You Doin?!"

Everybody loves a fun pick up line, even if they don’t work. Every time Joey used this line, there were almost guaranteed laughs to follow. I can’t remember a time where this line worked, but it is possible. Whether or not it was successful in "Friends" as a pick up line, it was definitely successful in catching on and making sure that we all had a good laugh. Next time you’re bored and looking to get a reaction out of someone, why not try your best Joey impression?

"How Rude!"

This is one that I’ve caught myself saying on multiple occasions. I grew up watching "Full House" so it only makes sense that it would rub off on me. This is a great catchphrase for whenever somebody says something that you find, well, rude – not in a serious way, but jokingly. This catchphrase caught on so much that I can’t even just say it in my own voice, I have to say it in Stephanie Tanner’s voice. Now, that’s a sign of a successful catchphrase.

7

"Yada, Yada, Yada..."

There are so many catchphrases from "Seinfeld" that I had such a hard time choosing, but this is one of my personal favorites. Personally I say "blah, blah, blah" all of the time, but have done a few "yada, yada, yadas." It is such a great filler phrase for when you don’t want to tell a whole story or just skip over the boring parts. Seinfeld was very realistic with the way people spoke in the show that I’m not surprised that this catchphrase has stuck around after the show’s end.

There are a lot of catchphrases that I wasn’t able to put on this list. I could keep going on for a lot longer than just a list of seven! Are there any that you wish I had put on the list? Are there any you disagree with being on this list?
