1. Thor

Debuting in 2011, "Thor" marked the release of one of Marvel's highly grossing films at the time, making this one of the best movies featuring Idris Elba. The premise of the first movie revolves around a god who, after being sent to Earth, takes on the role of the Defender of Earth's citizens until he can go back to Asgard, his home planet.

2. American Gangster

This movie is about the attempted takedown of Frank Lucas, the head of a drug empire during the 1970s. It stars Russel Crowe, Denzel Washington, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Although small, I firmly beilieve that this is one of Idris Elba's most prominent roles.

3. Thor: the Dark World

The sequel to 2011's "Thor" was just released this month. After being reuinited with Jane Foster, Thor will have no choice but to face a mysterious enemy that is threatening to destroy everything and everyone he has come to love. I can't wait to catch this film in theatres; I'm especially intrigued (for more reasons than one) to see how the awesome villian Loki fairs this time around.

4. Pacific Rim

This next film debuted in theatres during the summer. "Pacific Rim" focuses on the battle between sea creatures and humans as the word is plunged into an apocalyptic atmosphere. Idris Elba's portrayal of Stacker Pentecost was utterly brilliant! Charlie Hunnam also deserves honorary mention for his marvelous acting skills in the lead role.

5. Prometheus

This science fiction film revolves around a space exploration crew that lands on a distant planet on their quest to reveal the origin of humanity's creation. They unexpectedly encounter dangerous foes who seek to terminate their mission.

6. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, this movie is a biopic based on the autobiography of the former South African president. Expected to be released nationwide on November 29, 2013, I am looking forward to watching their portrayal of Nelson and Winnie Mandela.

7. RocknRolla

Also featuring the incredible Tom Hardy and Gerard Butler, "RocknRolla" is a film that essentially centers around criminals who are involved in a scam. However, the twist is that the real estate market plays a large part in the movie. In fear of revealing the plot, all I will say is that this film is definitely one that you should see! With the amazing Mr. Hardy on board, who could resist?

8. The Losers

I was both horrified and intrigued by the events in the film version of the popular comic book series. Former partners and agents until they were double crossed, the Losers seek vengeance against the CIA for their betrayal. Trust me when I say that you do not need to follow the comic series in order to understand the film.

9. This Christmas

Lastly, I fully admit that I am a total sucker for holiday films. "This Christmas" is definitely a feel-good film as it focuses on an estranged family and how they spend Christmas. As cliché as this may sound, this comedy is truly heartwarming.

Idris Elba has been in so many amazing movies that it was really difficult to just choose nine! I can't be the only one ecstatic at the prospect of more upcoming films from this talented British actor. Which of his films are you most excited to see?
