Most kids of the nineties will proudly claim that Pokémon was one of the absolute best cartoon shows of the decade. Famous for introducing us to beloved characters like Pikachu and the hopeless romantic Brock, Pokémon is an anime series based on the Nintendo-owned Japanese video game franchise. The core premise follows young Ash Ketchum and his loyal partner, Pikachu, as they travel across regions to compete in gym battles and become a Pokémon Master. 2. Digimon

Digimon was seriously underrated if you ask me. The show's premise revolved around a group of chosen children who were transported to protect both the real world and the Digiworld (digital world) where Digimon (digital monsters) lived. Compared to Pokemon, Digimon featured a darker, more continuous overarching storyline. I don’t know what I loved most about this show—the compelling character arcs or how the prefix "digi" was attached to almost every object and action. 3. Hamtaro

This show’s tagline was "little hamsters, big adventures," and that was honestly an understatement! Those adventurous hamsters got themselves into all kinds of fun trouble. Hamtaro, a cute talking hamster, was the central character who would sneak out of his cage every day to explore the neighborhood with his rodent friends. Hamtaro was originally based on a Japanese manga series, but once the animated series began broadcasting in North America, Hamtaro merchandise and popularity exploded.

4. Cardcaptors

I always feel that Cardcaptors is one of the more underrated Japanese TV adaptations of the late nineties. Perhaps it was because the narrative shared similarities with other magical anime of the era: a young student stumbles upon mystical powers and must capture magical cards to protect the world, all while trying to pass Friday’s spelling test. Despite the heavy editing for Western television, Cardcaptors offered fun animation and charming characters.

5. Yu-gi-oh

Maybe I’m a bit biased—after all, I grew up during the peak Pokemon craze—but Yu-Gi-Oh! was a slightly different vibe. The series focused on high-stakes card duels where characters summoned fantasy monsters to battle in dramatic arenas. Much like the competitive spirit in Digimon and other monster-dueling series, it inspired an enormous real-world trading card game phenomenon that fans still play today.

6. Dragon Ball Z

Without a doubt, Dragon Ball Z is one of the most famous and globally successful Japanese TV adaptations ever released. Continuing the story from the original Dragon Ball series, DBZ follows the life of Goku as an adult defending Earth against powerful galactic villains, leading up to epic battles featuring his son Gohan. 7. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon remains one of the most iconic magical girl series of the nineties. Although the narrative centers around Serena (Usagi Tsukino) as Sailor Moon, the story is fundamentally about a team of Sailor Guardians who fight evil by moonlight and win love by daylight. Much like the intense team battles seen in Dragon Ball Z, these heroines showed incredible bravery, standing up against dark forces and defending each other no matter the cost. In summary, they were unforgettable.
