On Golden Pond (1981)

Perhaps the most famous of all movies featuring real-life related actors, On Golden Pond became the surprise box office hit of 1981 when Henry and Jane Fonda teamed up on screen to portray an estranged and difficult father-daughter relationship that was not a million miles away from their situation in reality. The film examines the problems of a dysfunctional family and went on to receive a whopping ten Academy Award nominations, winning three.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

An emotional and heartfelt melodrama starring Will Smith and his young son Jaden as a father and son who fall on hard times, and spend a year of homelessness whilst father Chris works hard to make an impression during an internship at a stock brokerage firm. The real life chemistry between Smith and his son really helps elevate the film above a normal emotional drama and gives it a real sense of believability.

Maleficent (2014)

In one of the year’s biggest and most successful movies so far and easily the youngest of the movies featuring real-life related actors, Angelina Jolie stars as the infamous villain Maleficent in a retelling of Disney’s 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. Jolie’s daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt was chosen to star as a young version of Princess Aurora in the film, and rumour has it that the decision was made due to the fact that Vivienne was the only child not scared to tears by her mother’s intimidating make-up and costume!

Donnie Darko (2001)

Siblings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal play on screen brother and sister in Donnie Darko, one of the biggest cult films of the last fifteen years. The movie tells the bizarre and intriguing story of Donnie Darko, a smart and sensitive high school student whose life is consumed by a vision of a man in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world is going to end within a month. A weird and wonderful film that is filled with symbolism and hidden messages.

One of the coolest teenage flicks of the eighties, John Cusack stars as the resident high school cool kid Lloyd Dobler who falls hopelessly in love with a straight A, scholarship bound wonder girl Diane Court, played by Ione Skye. The film has that quintessential eighties teen romance feel to it, and John’s famous sister Joan Cusack makes a brief appearance as Lloyd’s older sibling Constance.

Wall Street (1987)

The eighties classic that spawned the catchphrase ‘greed is good’; Wall Street is another big film starring real-life related actors. Father and son acting duo Martin and Charlie Sheen replicate their familial relationship on the big screen for this financial drama. Released just before the stock market crash of 1987, Wall Street lifts the lid on the underhanded, immoral world of stock brokering that arises from some men having way too much power. This one’s a real nail biter!
