As soon as the weather starts getting really hot, the days get longer, and everything begins looking golden about six o'clock in the evening, I know summer is really here. As soon as I know summer is really here, I immediately queue up a few very special movies – movies that remind me of summer. I do it every single year. Sometimes I add something onto the list, but it's rarely anything recent. These are classics and they get more and more classic with every passing year. Ugh, I'm old. But anyway, these are, for me, the most quintessential summer movies. Let me know what you think.

1. Now and then
Oh, unquestionably. This is the essence of summer. I never lived in a neighborhood like this, but every time I rewatch this, I feel like I did. Which girl do you most identify with?
2. Wet Hot American Summer
I love this movie. I love the series, too, but the movie is just ... the movie is its own special thing. It's just so amazing. I mean, Bradley Cooper and Michael Ian Black. Forget about it. Paul Rudd? Yes, please!
3. The Sandlot
Well, duh. This is everything about summer. I mean, it was never my summer, but again, the movie makes me feel like it was. When I was a kid, I quoted one of the lines all the time: "Heroes get remembered, legends never die." I loved that line so much!
4. Summer School
This movie is almost enough to make me wish I'd gone to summer school. Almost, but not quite. Actually, I didn't see this for the first time until a few years ago. It was Heather's doing, which surprised the hell out of me, as my peanut doesn't normally enjoy movies made before 1990. Seriously, she has this vendetta against most '80s movies and music. Still, she likes this!

5. Ferris Bueller's Day off
We all know this feeling. We have all wanted to be Ferris. Once June rolls around and you're stuck in class, wanting to be anywhere else ... who hasn't dreamed of orchestrating the perfect sick day? Sometimes, when I'm faking sick (not that I ever do that, naturally), I still use several of the techniques I learned from Ferris when I was just a wee thing. They never worked with my mom, but they do work with my wife. Sorry, Heather.

6. The Notebook
I just ... I've added this on since I met Heather. She ... well, I love her. It's not that I don't like it, and it's not that it doesn't remind me of summertime, it's just that it ... okay. I confess. It makes me cry. It makes me cry and it makes Heather cry and then I feel even worse because she's crying, and I do so hate it when she's sad. I swear, I'd take it out of the line-up, but she won't let me.
7. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Same thing. Another confession: I watch this one solely for Heather. Again, it's not that I don't like it. It's just that I don't love it. I'm okay with that, though -- she's my best friend and my better half, and friendship and marriage are both about compromise, so there it is. I ain't even mad.
