Barbarella

Barbarella Price: $8.99 at amazon.com
Apparently, Jane Fonda is rather embarrassed about her appearance in this incredibly camp sci-fi classic. She was never going to win an Oscar for this one, that´s for sure, but if you´re in the mood for something camp, it´s just the thing. There´s no mistaking that it is a 60s film …

Head

Head Price: $18.99 at amazon.com
If you think you know the Monkees, then prepare for a shock. The band gleefully trashed their manufactured and squeaky-clean image in Head, a psychedelic collection of apparently disconnected scenes and songs. Very strange, but entertaining.

Blow up

Blow up Price: $11.98 at amazon.com
When you think of the Swinging Sixties, Blow Up is a film that captures the cool image of the decade. The story deals with a photographer who may have witnessed a murder, and features lots of terribly hip people doing terribly hip things.

Dr Strangelove

Dr Strangelove Price: $10.99 at amazon.com
Of course, there were plenty of 60s movies about Cold War paranoia. Dr Strangelove, however, dealt with the subject with incredibly black humour. I won´t give away the ending, except to say that while it´s not exactly happy, the choice of music is hilariously inappropriate …

5

The Producers

The Producers Price: $14.49 at amazon.com
As is so often the case, here the original is best. If you haven´t seen either version, two Broadway producers scheme to make money by putting on a musical in such bad taste that it will completely fail. Except their plans go utterly wrong …

Easy Rider

Easy Rider Price: $11.49 at amazon.com
Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson and cool bikes – everyone knows what Easy Rider is about. If you haven´t seen it yet, catch up with this classic 60s film and go on a road trip with the motorcycling trio.

7

Modesty Blaise

Modesty Blaise Price: $12.86 at amazon.com
How to describe Modesty Blaise? Well, if James Bond, Austin Powers and a groovy Sixties chick were somehow merged in a laboratory experiment, you´d end up with something like this 60s film. The books are better, but the film is very much of its time- still quite entertaining though.

8

Alfie

Alfie Price: $5.49 at amazon.com
Yet another the-original-was-best movie. Jude Law just couldn´t measure up to Michael Caine´s Alfie, and moving the location from London to New York was just plain wrong. Alfie was a London boy, that´s where he belonged, and so did the film.

The Italian Job

The Italian Job Price: $21.21 at amazon.com
I did quite enjoy the remake on its own merits, but it really couldn´t compare to its cinematic parent. Of all the 60s movies, this is the one you shouldn´t miss. The remake was too slick, whereas this was just fun. All together now: ´You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors!´

There are so many 60s movies to watch, so here I´ve given you just a selection of the more entertaining and less serious ones. They might have been made long before you were born, but they´re still worth a couple of hours of your time. So grab some DVDs and go back to the Sixties. What´s your favourite 60s film?
