After a bad day, I've found that one of the easiest ways to boost my mood is by watching some of the best movie musicals available. I'm a musical buff as it is, so it just makes sense to take advantage of the joy and inspiration that musicals offer. From overcoming challenges to addictive songs, the best movie musicals give me that quick boost I need to get over any bad day. The only hard part is choosing which one to watch.
The Wizard of Oz is truly a classic that spans generations. I love the independent spirit of Dorothy as she discovers more about herself on her journey home. It makes me feel happy for what I have instead of bemoaning what I don't. Plus, listening to Somewhere Over The Rainbow will make anyone smile. As one of the best movie musicals of all time, you'll find yourself feeling a lot better after taking a walk down the yellow brick road.
I know, yet another Judy Garland musical, but she is a queen of inspiring, fun musical masterpieces. If you're dealing with family issues, this one is a must. It gives you an inside look at the ups and downs of the lives of four sisters over a year. It's touching, but amusing and all the tunes are extremely catchy. It reminds me of simpler times and helps me let go of the complicated stresses of today.
Who can feel down after watching The Sound of Music? It's all about a woman exploring the world and successfully tackling even the most impossible challenges. I know a feel a bit better after singing along to My Favorite Things and Do-Re-Mi. If nothing else, it's the perfect movie for showing you the importance of staying true to yourself. It always a great boost after a day of feeling like I'll never overcome the challenges in front of me.
While August Rush isn't as full of singing as the others on this list, the instrumental pieces are just as powerful as the vocal numbers. There's something about watching young August face impossible odds as he struggles to find his birth parents that touches your heart. Seeing him hold on to his dream no matter what encourages me to never let go of my own dreams. Give this musical a go and you'll be happier in just a few short hours. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't feel better after watching that last powerful scene.
Sometimes Sister Act is left off of musical movie lists, but if you want something heartwarming and hilarious, you have to watch it. The music is great and Whoopie Goldberg is amazing as she realizes what's truly important in life. It's the perfect movie if you're not really into musicals since it focuses more on drama and comedy. Plus, all the music fits much more naturally than your average musical. Don't forget, there's always a sequel if you're really feeling down.
I've seen both versions of Hairspray and I honestly couldn't tell you which was my favorite. It tackles a ton of different issues all while keeping a light, inspiring feel. All Tracy Turnblad really wants to do is dance her heart out. We can all relate to that. See exactly what the power of positive thinking and great music can do for your mood. I ended up laughing so hard, I completely forget what was keeping me down.
Singin' In The Rain is one of the funniest of the movie musical classics. With Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds as the stars, you know you're in for a great time. Watch as the characters try to handle the transition from silent films to talkies. It'll have you laughing from start to finish. The amazing dance and musical numbers are all about having a good time. It's simple, it's clean and it'll work wonders for your mood.
