Since he's one of my favorite actors, there are so many Hugo Weaving characters I absolutely adore. He's more than just a character actor, however, because he has such a fantastic ability to really channel whomever he's playing – whether it's a drag queen, an elven king, or a really bad ass agent. If you love Hugo as much as I do, take a look at some of my absolute favorite Hugo Weaving characters, and don't forget to share yours at the end!

1. Elrond – the Lord of the Rings
Of course Elrond is one of my favorite Hugo Weaving characters. I'm a Lord of the Rings fanatic, and I think the trilogy was perfectly cast, but there's something about Weaving, his mannerisms, his decorum, and his subtlety, that really brought Elrond home for me. And of course I'm so glad to see him playing Elrond in The Hobbit films.
2. V – V for Vendetta
I love V. I loved V before V was in the movies, and having watched the movie, I cannot imagine anyone else as V. This film itself is just brilliant and thrilling and a little bit creepy, but Hugo as V, in particular, was just a winner all the way around. He has the charisma necessary to pull off a character like this – even behind the mask.

3. Tick/Mitzi – the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
I LOVE The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Any movie featuring drag queens, I'm pretty much happy. I don't know many people who haven't seen Priscilla, but if you're one of them, go see it – now. Don't worry, I'll wait. It's a musical as well, and the musical is certainly worth seeing, but the movie – I mean, Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce, and yes, Hugo Weaving. The plot is absolutely fantastical, but there are moments of such strong humanity – and since I don't want to spoil anything, I'll stop there.
4. Lionel – Little Fish
A lot of Hugo Weaving's films are Australian. Little Fish is another one, and it is just incredibly moving. Hugo stars alongside Cate Blanchett again, although in this case he's her stepfather. It's a touching, tragic film, and a role in which you don't necessarily expect to see Weaving.
Lionel is a character played by Hugo Weaving in the 2005 Australian romantic drama film, Little Fish. The film, directed by Rowan Woods, follows the story of Tracy Heart (Cate Blanchett), a woman living with a memory loss condition, and her journey to reclaim her past. Hugo Weaving plays her stepfather, Lionel, a former heroin addict.
Lionel is a gentle, loving character who is deeply devoted to Tracy and her family, despite his own struggles with addiction. He is a complex character, and Hugo Weaving expertly captures his inner struggle and his love for Tracy. The film is a heart-rending story of love and loss, and Hugo Weaving's performance as Lionel is a highlight.
In addition to Blanchett and Weaving, the film also stars Sam Neill, Noni Hazlehurst, and Martin Henderson. The film was a critical success, winning numerous awards, and was nominated for several Australian Film Institute Awards.
5. Agent Smith – the Matrix
Do I even need to say anything about this? I hope I'm not the only person who always secretly hoped to see Agent Smith defeat Neo. Weaving had so many quotable lines in these films, and his stoic expression and deadpan tone were just awesome. He makes it so easy to root for the bad guy.

6. Inspector Aberline – the Wolfman
This film wasn't hugely popular, but I loved it. I'm a hardcore fan of Anthony Hopkins, I love Emily Blunt, and of course, there's Hugo. I don't know what it is, but he does really well in law enforcement roles. You're left loving his acting but sometimes hating his character. It's just brilliant – and so is the ending.
7. Every Character – Cloud Atlas
So, I'm not going to lie. Cloud Atlas confused the crap out of me for the first hour, until it all finally started coming together. As you know if you've seen it, pretty much every actor in the movie took on a number of different roles. Hugo Weaving played Tadeusz Kesselring, Haskell Moore, Nurse Noakes, Bill Smoke, Old Georgie, and Melphi. I loved picking him out of each scene (I enjoyed doing that with everyone, actually), but if I had to pick a very, very favorite, even though the role was relatively small, it would have to be Nurse Noakes. Wow, she was vile.
8. Jack – Oranges and Sunshine
This film is actually based on a true story, which is why I initially watched it. It follows the story of social worker Margaret Humphreys, and stars Emily Watson as Margaret. The title itself is intensely moving for reasons revealed in the film, and the story is touching. Hugo Weaving's Jack is a wonderfully well-rounded character. This is another film that will likely leave you misty.
9. Jeremy – Bedrooms & Hallways
Understandably, I'm a fan of many LGBT films, and I love Hugo Weaving's willingness to play in them – not to mention his believability. Jeremy is just a wonderful character. He's not the lead but he plays an integral role. At first I was sure I wasn't going to like him, but he really redeems himself. And for Grey's Anatomy fans, Kevin McKidd stars in this as well.
10. McHeath – the Tender Hook
I adore the film noir genre, even modern day takes. This movie tells a steamy love story, and Hugo plays a rather sexy British confidence man. Again, you wouldn't necessarily expect to see him in a role like this, but it really works. Like, a lot.
I love it when an actor really makes me believe what he's doing, and Hugo does that for me. In terms of believability, he ranks right up there with Anthony Hopkins, who may well be my favorite actor of all time. What are some of your favorite Hugo Weaving characters? Let me know which of his movies you love to death!
