1. Elrond – the Lord of the Rings

Of course Elrond is one of my favorite Hugo Weaving characters. As a devoted fantasy fan, I think The Lord of the Rings trilogy was perfectly cast, but there is something truly special about Weaving's mannerisms, decorum, and calm authority that brought the lord of Rivendell to life. If you enjoy his work here, you will also admire how he brings gravitas to his multiple roles in Cloud Atlas. And of course, seeing him reprise Elrond in The Hobbit films was an absolute treat for long-time fans.

2. V – V for Vendetta

I love V. I was a huge fan of the graphic novel before the film adaptation arrived, and after seeing the movie, it is impossible to picture anyone else in the role. V for Vendetta is thrilling, thought-provoking, and atmospheric, but Hugo as V was a winner all around. He commands the screen with voice and presence alone, demonstrating incredible charisma even while hidden entirely behind a mask.

3. Tick/Mitzi – the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

I LOVE The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Movies featuring rich drag performances and vibrant musical numbers always bring immense joy. If you haven't seen Priscilla yet, make time to watch it soon. Starring alongside Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving delivers a performance filled with warmth and heart. The narrative is fantastical yet rooted in genuine human emotion, making it one of his most memorable early performances.

4. Lionel – Little Fish

A lot of Hugo Weaving's finest films are Australian productions. Little Fish is an incredibly moving drama where Hugo stars alongside Cate Blanchett, playing her troubled stepfather. It is a touching, tragic film that highlights a vulnerable side of his talent. Much like his memorable work as Elrond in Lord of the Rings, his dramatic depth here leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.

Much like his commanding presence as Agent Smith in The Matrix, his performance keeps you hooked until the final scene.

7. Every Character – Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas is an ambitious cinematic puzzle that demands your full attention. As the narrative unfolds, each cast member portrays multiple figures across different timelines. Hugo Weaving takes on six distinct roles, including Tadeusz Kesselring, Haskell Moore, Nurse Noakes, Bill Smoke, Old Georgie, and Melphi. Spotting him in each era is half the fun, though Nurse Noakes easily stands out as his most wickedly memorable transformation in the entire film.

8. Jack – Oranges and Sunshine

Based on true events, this poignant drama follows social worker Margaret Humphreys, played by Emily Watson, as she uncovers forgotten histories.
