Movies with one word titles tell it like it is. And actually, these one word titles fall in two camps. Either they are so lacking in ambiguity you’re in no doubt as to what the film is about, or they are enigmatic and leave you guessing. Here’s a mix of movies with one word titles young and old.

Grease (1978)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

This is the very first one that comes to my mind when thinking about movies with one word titles; after all, Grease is the word! One of the most beloved films of all time, I sometimes wonder if we are all born already knowing the famous songs word for word. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John became instant legends back in 1978 as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, two star-crossed summer lovers who face the obstacles of high school cliques and stereotypes to find true love. A timeless musical that will find new fans with each generation.

2

Jaws (1975)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

It’s the film that made everyone scared to go back into the water. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 suspense classic Jaws only needed a one word title to strike fear in the hearts of its audience. The film stars Roy Scheider as a police chief who fights to find and kill a giant great white shark that has been terrorizing his beach resort home. You’ll need to hide behind a cushion for this one!

3

Fargo (1996)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Fargo is a witty and unusual dark comedy by the acclaimed directing duo of the Coen brothers. Frances McDormand gives an Academy Award winning performance as a pregnant Minnesota police officer who investigates a series of murders in her home town. With an all star cast, including William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi, the film displays an interesting combination of satirical wit and gripping crime drama action.

4

Goodfellas (1990)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

One of the quintessential movies that gives an insight into the fascinating and dangerous world of the American mafia, Goodfellas tells the true story of mobster turned informant Henry Hill. The film is effortlessly stylish and really immerses the audience into the Mafioso universe, boasting a cast full to the brim with charisma, including Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. For a film with only a one word title, Goodfellas packs one hell of a punch!

5

Monster (2003)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

A gritty, hard hitting but excellent film from 2003 starring an almost unrecognizable Charlize Theron, who gives an Academy Award winning performance as real life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos was convicted for killing seven men in the 1980s and 1990s, and was eventually executed in 2002. Monster gives the audience an insight into the life and motivations behind the story the press liked to tell.

Crash (2004)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Crash came out of absolutely nowhere in 2004 to become the surprise critical hit of the year, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 2005 ceremony. The film is an intelligent and thought provoking drama that examines racial tension and prejudice affecting African American, Hispanic, Persian and Caucasian characters in modern day Los Angeles. A star filled cast including Sandra Bullock and Don Cheadle make this one word titled film an absolute must watch.

7

Bridesmaids (2011)

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com

Perhaps the most popular of the movies with a one word title in recent years, 2011’s smash hit Bridesmaids was the female answer to male dominated comedies like The Hangover that we had all been waiting for. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and many others star as a group of women who try to organize a hen party, with hilarious and almost unbearably awkward consequences. Bridesmaids is the perfect film for a night in with the girlfriends accompanied by wine and all the junk food you can get your hands on!
