The Bachelor

The Bachelor The Bachelor is definitely one of the staple American shows of the 2000s. Running since 2002, the Bachelor is a “classic” American “reality” show. The show is about a young, hot bachelor who has his pick of a group of young, hot, single women. He picks one and soon after the season is done filming the relationship ends. And just when your heart is about to begin the mourning process for this modern day Romeo and Juliette, a new season of The Bachelor begins and all is well in the world again.

The Real World

The Real World One of the first reality shows on MTV and in general, The Real World first aired in 1992 making it the longest running show on MTV. The Real World is well embedded in to American pop culture and for good reasons too. In its long run, the show has dealt with many social issues that affect people on daily basis like sexual preference, substance abuse, AIDS and STI and more. To stay relevant in people’s mind, when MTV isn’t airing The Real World, the station airs The Challenge – a spinoff of The Real World which consists of previous cast members of The Real World doing challenges for prizes and money.

The Simpsons

The Simpsons The Simpsons is one of the longest running shows in American television history and has aired over 500 episodes in 24 years. The cartoon follows a middle class family in their everyday human interactions. There’s clueless, blue collar Homer who tries to be a good husband and father but falls short from time to time, loving and forgiving housewife Marge, scholarly and sensitive Lisa, prankster extraordinaire Bart and irrelevant Maggie. Although the show is called The Simpsons and focuses mostly on the family, there is literally a town worth of background characters we have come to know and love over the years like Ned Flanders and Groundskeeper Willie.

4

American Idol

American Idol A reality show which sprung up in 2002 and has been running since, American Idol gives hopefuls a chance at fame and fortune. Although the contestants are talented and the show has introduced us to Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Phillip Phillips, it’s the chemistry and dynamic between the judge’s panels that have brought us back every season. From everything to “did Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell have a thing?” to “Did you see when Nicki Minaj ripped Mariah Carey a new one?” sometimes the talent of the contestants has been overshadowed by the outrageousness of the judges.

5

Friends

Friends Critically acclaimed, Friends is arguably one of, if not the, best TV show of the 90s and early 2000s. Friends was a show about 6 dynamic friends who had completely different personality traits from one another – they lived a pretty “hip” life in New York and were “average, middle class” adults in their late 20s/early 30s. However, their diversity from one another was what made the show humorous as well as a fan favourite.

Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live Also known as SNL, Saturday Night Live is a late night, NBC comedy sketch show with hires celebrities to host every week. Besides the fact that SNL has been running for 38 years, SNL has become a staple American show because of social and poltical issues it addresses on the show. Plus, the fact that show is aired live makes it fun for the audience with from everything to blunders during sketches to the Ashlee Simpson Lip Syncing Scandal.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Another late nighter, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has been running since 1992 with 10 month “pause” in May 2009. As of recent years though, the attempts to replace Jay Leno and the controversies ensuing have overshadowed the talk show. The biggest “controversy” to date is when Leno was “unwillingly” phased out and Conan O’Brien was phased in. However, the ratings weren’t doing as well with the new host and so NBC brought back Leno and said sayonara to Conan. Now Leno is losing his show again, this time to late night comedian Jimmy Fallon. Hopefully Jay will have a more graceful exist off the late night stage the second time around.

A lot of us have grown up with these television shows and they've had some sort of impact in our lives. Many of these shows have even been running for more than 10 years, whether they are still filming or are syndicated, and are now a big part of North American pop culture. What are some of your favourite staple American TV shows?
