Although Elle Woods (Witherspoon) runs into a lot of obstacles while going to Harvard, she never gives up and always put her best, stylish foot forward. This inspiring girl power movie shows that we can achieve anything we put our minds to!
2. Charlie’s Angels (2000)
Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz star in the remake of the classic TV crime-drama Charlie’s Angels. The TV show was groundbreaking as the show featured roles which were typically reserved for men. Drew, Lucy, and Cameron kicked major arse and remained true to one another while looking like supermodel action heroes.
3. My Fair Lady (1964)
This classic girl power film featuring Audrey Hepburn transforms from a poor flowergirl into a lady of high society based on a bet by a haughty phonetics professor. This film is the original extreme makeover where Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) transforms from a poor peasant to London lady and shows that misogyny and class discrimination have no place in the world.
4. Steel Magnolias (1989)
This all-star celebrity cast follows a group of Southern friends through life’s ups and downs and how they stuck together through it all. This movie is charming, sweet, and a definite tear jerker! This is a great movie for a girls night in or sleepover. Steel Magnolias is one of the more stirring girl power movies that will definitely teary-eyed and wanting a hug.
5. Norma Rae (1979)
What list of movies promoting girl power would be complete with Norma Rae?! Be inspired by this oldie but goodie starring Sally Field as a textile worker who fights for women’s rights in the workplace. You’re probably thinking this movie is old as dirt, but it’s a good one. This film was released before we had many of the labor laws in place today, let’s celebrate our trailblazing sisters!
6. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
Angeline Jolie and Brad Pitt star in this film about a married couple whose marriage is getting stale and it turns out they’re both seeking thrills elsewhere- they’re both assassins. Get your fill of action, beautiful people and laughs. Jane Smith (Jolie) is always put together, a hired killer, and still makes dinner on time every night. This movie is girl power to the 10th power.
7. Erin Brockovich (2000)
This bio starring Julia Roberts as a single, unemployed mother who turns into almost independently takes on the Pacific Gas and Electric Company who was accused of polluting a city’s water supply. Talk about girl power (and girl power movies!), Erin Brockovich (Roberts) used her feminine wiles and her strong will to take on one of the biggest companies in the nation.
8. The House Bunny (2008)
Eternal optimist Shelly, played by Anna Farris was a former Playboy bunny who was kicked out the mansion and unexpectedly becomes a house mother to a sorority of socially awkward girls. This girly girl power film has all the making of a total chick flick- funny, inspiring, and will warm your heart.
9. Sex and the City (2008)
Our favorite group of fashionistas took on the big screen in this heart-warming flick about 4 friends and how they’re always there for each other through all of life’s joys and tragedies. SATC 1 was the perfect supplement to the series filled with lots of great fashion, girl talk and drama.
10. The Help (2011)
Another movie with an all-star cast which takes place in the 1960’s during the Civil Rights movement that shows the lives of well-to-do women and their hired help. Emma Stone plays an aspiring writer who courageously writes about the lives of the help despite the warnings of her friends, family and society.
