1. Doctor Who
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
If you don’t take my word for it, take the world of millions of dedicated Doctor Who fans; this show is hands down one of the best British TV shows out there. You might be turned off by how sci-fi it sounds, but it can make you laugh, cry, and experience every possible emotion in between. Trust me, one episode, and you will be hooked. Not to mention every Doctor is pretty easy on the eyes.
2. The Office
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
What? The Office? But that’s the American show with Steve Carell, isn’t it? Well yes, but the British version of The Office came first. And it is equally, if not more, hilarious. And it has an all star cast like Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, and Mackenzie Crook. Watch both the American and British version of The Office and you can decide which one you like better.
3. Sherlock
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
If Benedict Cumberbatch and his cheekbones aren’t enough to pull you into Sherlock, then all other aspects of this show will get you hooked. It takes the famous story of Sherlock Holmes and puts it in modern day London. Each season only includes three episodes, but each episode is an hour and a half long. It may seem like a lot, but you will want to binge watch this show in one sitting. Not only are Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman absolutely amazing actors, but Steven Moffat is one of the greatest TV writers of our generation.
4. Downton Abbey
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
If you are a fan of period shows, this is a must watch. It tells the story of the Crawley family as they navigate the 1920s. They find love, deal with their sometimes crazy family, and have to go through a few drama filled events on the way. Not to mention, Dame Maggie Smith might be one of the sassiest and wittiest characters on television. She will absolutely be your favorite character.
5. Misfits
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Misfits is a great TV show but seems to be widely underrated. It is about a group of teenagers who get stuck in a freak thunderstorm while doing some community service. They find out that they all have strange super powers and have to decide how to use them. Each member of the group has their own quirky personality that you hate to love. This show is so great because it takes a group of characters you initially hate and turns them on their head until you are rooting for them.
6. Luther
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Confession time: I have never actually watched Luther. But all of my friends keep telling me how addicting it is. It is about a genius detective named John Luther who is obsessed with his job to the point that it becomes dangerous to himself and those around him. Just from the trailers, I can tell this show is going to be quite addictive. But don’t take my word for it, check the show out yourself.
7. Merlin
On iTunes: itunes.apple.com
There is a reason so many people are obsessed with this show. It has such an attractive cast, but storyline and relationship between the characters are really what get you addicted. Everyone has heard of the story of the King Arthur, but this story goes in to his teenage years and his friendship with Merlin. The catch: magic is outlawed and Merlin has to keep his secret from his best friend, Arthur. Even with the silly special effects, Merlin is quite a suspenseful and enjoyable show.
Just because you live in America doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate how incredible some British TV shows are. What did you think of these best British TV shows? Are there any other British TV shows that you are addicted to? Why do you think these shows are so popular?
