What makes one TV show good? Is it the cast, the plot, the use of special effects, or the way characters develop through the seasons? Well for me, it’s all of the above, plus a thing or two on the side like witty remarks, unexpected twists and the chance to share a laugh or two. Now, since the TV industry is constantly devising new schemes to keep us glued to the “magical box”, it’s only logical that half of those “productions” won’t be worth watching. However, there are always those few best TV shows that kind of stay carved in our memories long after the final season has ended. Well, I’m going to make a list of such TV shows today so hope you’ll have fun reading it. And here they are – 7 well-known titles that pretty much spell best TV shows to me:

1. ‘Allo, ‘Allo
Price: $175.99 at amazon.com
Chubby Rene Artois, his wife Edith, Michelle from the Resistance, monsieur Alfonse, Herr Otto Flick of the Gestapo, two British airmen, waitresses and many more – who could ever forget a crazy bunch like this! I absolutely love this show despite the fact that I wasn’t even in my parent’s long term plans when it first started airing. Running a coffee shop in a small French town of Nuvion during the World War Two was not an easy task for Rene, but he has managed to survive everything and, when I say “everything” I mean a lot of weird, totally funny situations you simply must see for yourself!
2. Prison Break
Price: $124.49 at amazon.com
Amaury Nolasco, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell – a girl simply doesn’t need any more excuses to see this show! I started watching it because of the above mentioned hotties, but the action, romance, drama, and all those cliffhangers are what kept me glued to the TV set. This show definitely had all the elements of a huge hit; an interesting plot, great cast, and fresh ideas being just a small part of it. The end result? The first two seasons gave my nerves a hell of an exercise, while season three was only half-decent and season four… well they just had to ride that money-train until the very end, didn’t they? Nevertheless, the show was really amazing so it definitely deserves to be on my humble list of best TV shows.
Frequently asked questions
3. Merlin
Price: $25.49 at amazon.com
Now, if you think this is just one of those copy-paste Arthurian legends, you’re in for a big surprise. Yup, even great wizards like Merlin had to start somewhere and, if you’re watching the show, you know how it all begun. I just can’t believe we’ll have to wait until 2012 to enjoy the fourth (and probably the last) season of this great show. Now, in case you haven’t been following the show and you’re dying for a good medieval fantasy story, I’d suggest you get on to business. You’ll have a lot of catching up do until the next season starts airing and who knows… you might even learn a thing or two. Like how to put the word “clotpole” into a good use.
4. 3rd Rock from the Sun
Price: $189.99 at amazon.com
Well, if aliens are indeed planning to invade Earth, I wish they could all be like the Solomon family. Crazy Dick, tomboy Sally, rational Tommy and odd Harry are definitely an unusual bunch but it was fun watching them as they were trying to get used to their human bodies and normal human behaviors. I’m not sure if everybody would agree on it being on the list of best TV shows but hey, you’ll have to admit it was one of the funniest!
5. Bones
Price: $199.99 at amazon.com
Smart, slightly nerdy and introvert Temperance and her macho partner Booth are definitely a match made in heaven! But I’m not talking about romance only, girls! After all, we all know Bones and Booth always managed to find their villain and put him behind bars! I will never forgive my fav channel for taking Bones away from me so in case some of you know of a good web channel I could watch it on, do let me know. It’s going to sound funny but the last episode I’ve seen is the one when Temperance decides to have a baby and asks Booth to be the donor. Yup, I know, I have a lot of catching up to do…

6. Star Gate
Price: $82.99 at amazon.com
SG is a bit outdated, I know but with so many sequels, there is no doubt this show will continue on being one of the most popular space/sci-fi adventure series ever. I’m watching Star Gate Atlantis these days and I must say that I totally love the fact that the old Star Gate (SG1) isn’t totally forgotten. What can I do, I’m a sucker for traditional stuff.
7. Sex and the City
Price: $135.99 at amazon.com
Now, how could I ever make a list of best TV shows ever made without mentioning my personal favorite! I’ve watched all episodes more times than I care to remember and I’m still more than willing to spend my half an hour relaxing with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha every time one of the local TV stations starts re-running these episodes for the 4876th time. Seeing the famous quartet “running” the streets of New York still feels empowering plus, a girl just has to love all those shoes and fab designer outfits.
But what about That 70’s Show, Andromeda, FRIENDS, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy or NCIS! I bet each and every one of us has a different take on how a list of best TV shows ever made should look like! So do comment and let me know which one of these we have in common and which ones you totally disagree on. Could you list some of your personal favorites or the ones that could easily be categorized as the best TV shows of the past decade?
