1 Remember the Titans
This movie is vital to the lineup of best sports movies, and quite possibly the most popular. Not only is it the story of teamwork, hard work and determination on a high school football team, Remember the Titans also tells the story of breaking down racial divides… and that's harder hitting than football!
2 The Mighty Ducks
A true underdog story, The Mighty Ducks is a movie that combines humor, inspiration and camaraderie all in one. Coach Gordon Bombay turns a team who can collectively barely skate, into a team that can win. Plus, it coined the infamous term, "Ducks fly together!"
3 Bend It like Beckham
Not only did Bend it Like Beckham help us discover the great (and fabulous!) Kiera Knightley, it also shed light on women's soccer, an overly male-dominated sport. Proving that following your dreams is more important than finding a husband, this witty comedy is motivational for more than its athletic accomplishments.
4 Space Jam
Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny and evil space aliens on the big screen together? That's a combination that's difficult to top! It's as fun to watch Porky Pig and Babs Bunny get their game on as it is to watch Michael Jordan's fellow NBA players in their prime in this fun-loving basketball classic fit for the whole family.
While Ladybugs is a teeny tiny bit sexist (the entire theme revolves around a boy playing soccer for a girl's youth team in order to make them a better team), Rodney Dangerfield really steals the show—and makes us laugh! By using his girlfriend's son as a tool to make the soccer team he is coaching better, he gets himself in a heap of comedic trouble.
6 The Sandlot
If you aren't aware of the many ways to reference Babe Ruth (the Great Bambino, the Sultan of Swat, the King of Crash…) then The Sandlot will fill you in, stat. A story of friendship, getting in and out of pickles, and fitting in within a new town, this timeless baseball tale will always serve as one the best sports movies of all time.
The quote, "Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys," embodies the inspirational spirit of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team's victory over Russia. A true sports story of collaboration and overcoming obstacles, when the film's 135 minutes are over, you'll believe in miracles, too.
8 A League of Their Own
Ever heard the term, "There's no crying in baseball!" and wondered where it was from? That's right: A League of Their Own. A true event-inspired film about women in baseball featuring Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, this movie captures the story of war, sibling rivalry, sports, and Tom Hanks at his best.
9 Rookie of the Year
As kids, you may have dreamed of becoming a professional sports star when you grew up. But for 12-year-old Henry Rowengartner, his dream becomes a reality—about ten years early! The starting pitcher position for the Cubs doesn't come without sacrifices though, forcing Henry to navigate the tricky ground between boy and baseball star. And while the storyline is entertaining enough, Henry's boyhood taunting during big league games make us laugh, as well.
If you've ever wanted to run up and down the 72 stone steps before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you must have seen Rocky. A heartening, triple-Oscar-winning story that embodies the saying, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog," Rocky proves that with the right amount of hard work, anybody can become somebody.
There are hundreds of other sports movies out there. Do you think any others deserve to be included in our list of the best sports movies of all time? Comment and let me know!
