Over thirty years ago, The Buggles released their hit “Video Killed the Radio Star”. It seems that three decades later, cinema is now threatened – this time, by the movie pirates. Millions of dollars have been lost by movie companies over the years due to websites offering free illegal downloads of the movies. Here is a list of the 10 most pirated movies ever:
James Cameron’s 2009 science fiction movie grossed nearly 3 billion dollars in total, so it is understandable that pirates have been so keen to distribute the movie so readily. Avatar managed to surpass Cameron’s other hit movie – Titanic – as the highest-grossing movie of all time, despite the 16.58 million illegal downloads. Still, I doubt Mr. Cameron is too bothered: almost 3 billion dollars isn’t a bad day at the office!
When I read that Kick-Ass was second on this list, I thought that there must have been a mistake. Although I am guilty as having seen the movie (who would pass up an opportunity to see Nicolas Cage in action?), I was surprised that the mass amount of pirates want to watch this movie. I guess the comic book is typical of the sort of nerdy guys that pirate movies when they get home from work though!
Honestly I was surprised that Star Trek made it into the list of 10 most pirated movies ever. I personally only saw the movie because my dad is a huge Star Trek fan; however it seems the 2009 adaption by J.J. Abrams was a huge hit – once again, the sort of people that download movies must be into a bit of fantasy!
Transformers is one of my young nephew’s favorite movies to have ever been created, so Transformers 2 is – in his eyes - understandably on this list. If you are wondering why it’s on the list of 10 most pirated movies, just imagine Shia LaBeouf getting hot and steamy running all over the globe. Sorry, but I don’t get what all the fuss is about.
Inception was a very confusing movie, but its success was evident: the 2010 movie grossed over $825 million worldwide, with a stunning performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. Over ten years on from Titanic, he’s still got it!
The 2010 movie Shutter Island is rightfully included on the list of 10 most pirated movies because of the sheer brilliance of it. It paints a wonderful picture of the psychological side of illness with another stellar performance by Leonardo. My love of Leonardo’s movies is becoming somewhat of a pattern…
This movie is a small-budget British crime film directed by Guy Ritchie (a household name for his marriage to Madonna). The wonderful Scottish Gerard Butler gives one of the best performances of his career in this movie, so if you haven’t seen it it’s worth watching.
Quite possibly the funniest movie I have ever had the pleasure of watching, The Hangover is just brilliant. With tremendous acting and screenplay, it (and its sequel) is sure to be featured on this list for years to come.
Once again a superhero movie graces this list of the 10 most pirated movies. Robert Downey Jr. plays the title character very well, making it in my opinion the best superhero movie to have been created. If I’m honest, I think it should be higher up this list.
The ultimate chick-flick! Although the acting in this movie leaves a lot to be desired, what lady would complain at spending 121 minutes starting at two toned men (Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner) half-naked for most of the movie? Certainly not me!
There you have it: the list of the 10 most pirated movies. Don’t you find it a strange mix? I would also say it’s quite masculine in its content – I wonder what that tells us about the pirate movie business. If you haven’t seen any of these movies, I would recommend viewing them – legally!
