Do you ever get fed up with loud action movies, superhero movies with their special effects or endless fluffy romcoms? I’ve always been a fan of arthouse and indie movies but they aren’t really shown in multiplex theaters. Thank heaven for Netflix. There’s always something in the schedule if you don’t want movie mainstream.

1 Strictly Ballroom
A really unique movie from Moulin Rouge creator Baz Luhrmann about the cutthroat world of competitive ballroom dancing. Something of a cult classic!
A really touching story about an elderly man who, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, comes out of the closet to his son shortly after his mother has died. Christopher Plummer became the oldest recipient of an Oscar for his role.
3 Beyond the Lights
A hidden gem about a singer who, ridden with depression, attempts suicide only to strike a powerful connection with the police officer assigned to be her bodyguard who saves her life.
This comedy drama about a community of transgender prostitutes is absolutely extraordinary, mainly for the fact that it was filmed entirely on an iPhone!
5 Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
A man whose wife leaves him on the spot after news that an asteroid is about to hit earth goes on a mission to find the love of his love before it’s too late. Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley? Hell yeah!
An awesome retro coming of age movie about a group of three friends who get mixed up with the wrong people on the wrong day, leading to an adventure they’ll never forget!
7 Man up
When a man mistakes a woman for his blind date, she decides to go along with the story, not knowing how much of a genuine connection they would strike up underneath the lie.
8 A Royal Affair
The story of a young queen who falls in love with her physician, starting a national revolution in the process!
9 Life Itself
A movie any true film lover needs to see: a documentary about the life and career of the industry’s best-loved critic, Roger Ebert.
10 His Girl Friday
A brilliant 1940s comedy starring Cary Grant that can be seen as the precursor to many of the slapstick, screwball type comedies of the 80s and 90s.
A really magical, underrated movie about a young man who attempts to prove his love for a girl by venturing in to the world of fairies to retrieve a fallen star.
Human life is changed forever after a space crash on the Mexican border leads to an alien invasion on earth.
13 The Guest
A tense thriller about a family who out of the blue receive a guest who claims to be a friend of their son who died in action.
14 In Bruges
A great black comedy about a couple of hitmen who messed up a job and are awaiting further instructions in the Belgian city of Bruges.
15 Sleepwalk with Me
A man is driven to sleepwalking after the anxiety, stress and pressure of proposing to his longtime girlfriend all get to be a bit too much!
A great modern cult favorite about a summer camp for lovers of everything musical theatre. Think Glee but better!
17 Jenny’s Wedding
A touching independent movie starring Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel as an engaged lesbian couple whose coming wedding threatens to ruins family relationships.
